61 TREK ASSEMBLY MANUAL 27 April 2012
Supporting Information
To check spoke tension
1. Check for good spoke tension with a tensiometer.
2. If you do not have a tensiometer, pluck each spoke and listen to the tones as an
indicator of spoke tension. On a wheel with even dishing and spoke lengths (like a
conventional front wheel) all plucked spokes should sound the same. On wheels
with dishing, uneven spoke length, dierent spoke gauges, etc. all the spokes on
one side of the wheel should sound the same, although they may sound dierent
from one side of the wheel to the other.
To true a wheel
1. Place the wheel in a truing stand.
2. Set the gauges close to the rim.
3. Spin the wheel and check for lateral deviation (side to side) and vertical deviation
(roundness).
4. With truing stands that have dish indicators, check for dish (centering of the rim
over the hub locknuts). Otherwise, check the dish with a dishing tool.
5. At spots where the rim is not centered, pluck the adjacent spokes to evaluate their
tension.
If you were to tighten an already tight spoke, you may be making the wheel weaker as you true it.
A wheel with uneven spoke tension will quickly move to equalize its tension, losing its trueness.
Instead, your goal should be to equalize spoke tension as you true the wheel. Often this means
working with spokes that are not immediately at the point where the wheel is out of true.
6. Loosen or tighten the spoke nipples to move the rim and equalize the spoke
tension.
To unwind spokes
1. Remove the wheel from the truing stand.
2. Place the wheel on its side on the floor.
3. Press the rim towards the floor (Figure 17) with enough lateral force to de-tension
each spoke.
4. Keep your hands spaced so that they describe a 90 degree, pie-shaped section
of the wheel. If you press the wheel with your hands at 180 degrees, its likely to
potato-chip as the spokes find a state of overall lower tension. Be careful not to
overdo this; some rims are much stiffer than others, and inappropriate force can
ruin a wheel.
5. Listen to the wheel; when its has stopped ‘pinging’ you have completed the spoke
unwinding.
6. Put the wheel back into the truing stand.
7. Check the wheel again for trueness.
When the wheel remains true after unwinding the spokes, the wheel is done.
