59 TREK ASSEMBLY MANUAL 27 April 2012
Supporting Information
5. On the side where the gauge no longer touches, measure the distance from the
gauge to the dropout.
6. If the frame is more than 2.0mm out of alignment. Call Customer Service.
Note: Frame alignment is not the same as actual measurement. See page 55.
To check wheel centering
The following method measures frame clearance, not frame alignment. Although
we do check frame tubes for straightness, clearance is a cosmetic attribute, so it
is not important to overall bicycle performance. In other words, the stays can be
o-center while the wheel is aligned. Although wheel alignment is really the critical
factor, we know your customers notice cosmetic issues. That said, here are the steps
to checking stay clearance, which you should follow to measure either seat stays or
chainstays.
1. Clean the rear dropouts thoroughly.
2. Place an accurately trued and dished rear wheel (Figure 104) in the frame.
3. Measure the distance from the top of the rim to the inside of the stay (Figure
105). Do not do this test with a tire on the wheel. Tires have their own alignment
issues, so a tire may not sit evenly on the rim (Figure 106). Tire alignment is not our
responsibility.
4. Measure the other side.
5. Turn the wheel over (Figure 107) and repeat the test.
6. If the rim is off-center by more than 2.0mm, call Customer Service.
If a frame is out of spec
Our frames are built by hand and checked by people. We all know that occasionally
people make mistakes. If you nd a frame that is out of spec, call your customer
service representative to discuss solutions for your customer.
