57 TREK ASSEMBLY MANUAL 27 April 2012
Supporting Information
Evaluating Possible Mis-alignment
Our frames are built by hand and checked by people. We all know that occasionally
people make mistakes. If you suspect a frame is out alignment, follow this
procedure:
1. Carefully measure the frame to determine if it is out of alignment.
2. Compare your measurements to our specifications.
3. If you find a frame that is out of spec, call Customer Service to discuss solutions
for your customer, or with a full-suspension bike, follow the MAB instructions to
adjust the swingarm alignment.
Measure carefully
We have supplied specic instructions for measuring frames. However, some points
might be considered “ne print.” As an example, we say to use an accurately trued
and dished wheel. If you use a wheel that is not accurately trued and dished, you
may get a bad measurement. Since we are working with very small increments,
fractions of millimeters, you must follow the procedures with care.
When a frame is returned for alignment issues, we check them with our methods and
tools. If we determine that you have returned a frame that is within our specications,
we will send the inspected and approved frame back to your shop.
Compare the specications
Think about what you are measuring; the numbers you measure may not be the
same as “out of alignment” dimensions. Example: If a string on the non-drive side
of the seat tube is 26mm from the seat tube, and the drive-side string is 30mm
from the seat tube, the frame is 2mm out of alignment, not 4mm (Figure 99). Our
specications cover distance from centerline, not raw measurements.
Whenever possible, measure to the interface with a component. As an example, it
is better to measure to the inside of a dropout than to the outside of the dropout,
because our concern is the location of the hub and the dropouts may not be the
same thickness. An another example, it is more accurate to measure to the dropout
than to the seatstay.
Customer Service
If you do nd a frame that is out of spec, call your customer service representative to
discuss solutions for your customer.
