60 TREK ASSEMBLY MANUAL 27 April 2012
Supporting Information
Wheel Detailing
If a wheel is more than about 1.0mm out of true, out of round, or out of dish, it
should be repaired prior to sale. These instruction explain how to true a normally-
spoked wheel, and a paired-spoke wheel.
For the spokes to properly support the rim, they must be straight as they exit the hub
and enter the rim. If they exhibit a curve, their tension will change a great deal with
every revolution of the wheel.
One of the keys to wheel durability is proper spoke tension. There is a fairly wide
range of acceptable overall tension for a given wheel, but the individual tensions of
the spokes should be fairly close. Otherwise, cyclical loading will cause the wheel to
move out of true. This cyclical loading and unloading of the spokes occurs with each
turn of the wheel as the bottom of the rim is supporting the full weight of the rider.
The rim should be moved into its true position while spoke tension is evened out.
This requires doing several steps at once, which by necessity have to be explained
separately.
As the nipples are turned, the spokes will twist. Friction between the spoke, nipple,
and rim will tend to hold some of the spokes in this twisted, or wound-up, position.
A spoke with wind-up is shorter than one that is not wound up, so wound-up spokes
will give a false impression of true. As a rider applies their weight to the wheel, the
spokes will be de-tensioned, which allows the spoke to unwind. This is usually
accompanied by a clicking or pinging sound.
To prepare a wheel for inspection and truing
1. Remove the tire and inner tube.
2. For a rear wheel, remove the cassette and spoke protector.
3. With a disc brake wheel, it may be necessary to remove the rotor.
4. It may also be useful to remove the spoke reflector.
To stress relieve crossed spokes
1. Place a flat instrument (screwdriver shaft, cone wrench, etc.) between crossed
pairs.
2. Bend the spokes of a crossed pair towards each other.
3. Firmly squeeze all same-side non-crossed pairs in the wheel.
4. Check the spoke tension, and tighten as necessary.
To stress relieve radial spokes
1. Tap on the spoke bend with a non-metallic hammer, or non-metallic drift punch
(plastic, wood, etc.).
2. Tap the spoke about 10mm from the spoke head until the spoke runs straight.
3. Check the spoke tension, and tighten as necessary.
