11 TREK ASSEMBLY MANUAL 27 April 2012
Basic Assembly
To install the handlebar tape
1. Tape the housings in place on the handlebar (Figure 24).
2. Carefully roll the lever hoods inside-out.
3. On each side, install a short piece of tape to cover the area of the lever clamp and
handlebar behind the lever. This piece of tape needs to extend inside the lever
hood about 10mm on each side. Usually the tape manufacturer provides extra
short sections of tape for this purpose. Cut the tape to the desired length.
4. Start the roll tape at the lower end of the handlebar (Figure 25). By taping in
the bottom-to-top direction a ‘shingle’ effect is created so the normal force of
the riders hands has less tendency to push the tape off the bars or separate
it. Wind the tape from the inside, up, and over. The right side of the bar is
wrapped clockwise, while the left side is wrapped counter-clockwise. Continue
wrapping the handlebar, making sure the tape has an even overlap wherever
possible. The minimum overlap on straight sections should be maintained in
the curved parts of the bar.
5. Wrap over the tape section that covers the brake strap (Figure 26).
6. At the end of the section to be taped, hold the remaining tail of tape at the same
winding angle, but extend it forward of the bike.
7. Cut the tape with scissors. Make an angled cut with a point, with the cut line
perpendicular to the handlebar (Figure 27).
8. Finish wrapping the tape, and align the cut edge of the tape with your desired
stopping line.
9. Wrap the cut end with finishing tape. Start at a point slightly further out than the
width of the electrical tape, and wrap the tape towards the handlebar center, in
the same direction as the bar tape (Figure 28). While stretching the tape slightly,
allow about 5mm of finishing tape to overlap and contact the handlebar. Smooth
the tape for a finished appearance, and cut the tape so the end is out of sight,
underneath the handlebar.
Some handlebar wrap suppliers provide finishing tape, or use electrical tape.
10. Install bar plugs. Carefully tuck the starting end of the tape into the handlebar,
and press in a bar plug to hold it in place.
• For Bontrager Buzzkill bar plugs, trim the tape flush with the end of the bar and
slide the plugs in without the tape ends inside the bar.
11. Unroll the lever hoods. Figure 27. Cut the tape at an angle to parallel the end of the
taped section
Figure 28. Finish the wrap with another piece of tape
Figure 25. Trim the tape covering the lever clamp
Figure 26. Start the tape at the lower end of the handlebar,
winding up and out
