13 TREK ASSEMBLY MANUAL 27 April 2012
Basic Assembly
Brakes
It can be useful to lubricate brake pad attachment nuts or bolts with a light bearing
grease. This makes pad adjustment easier by reducing the tendency of the pad to
rotate as the attachment bolt or nut is tightened.
V-type brakes
As the brake pads wear, the contact point of V-brake pads move down on the rim,
so set these pads as high on the rim as possible without hitting the tire. V-type brake
arms should be close to parallel as the pads contact the rim. If they are not, move
the pad alignment washers to align the brake arms.
Tools required
• 4mm and/or 5mm allen wrench
• Small phillips-head screwdriver, or 2mm allen wrench for centering screws
• Sharp probe (dental pick, sharpened spoke, etc.)
• Housing cutters, or dikes
• Bench grinder
To install V-type brakes
1. Tighten all brake mounting bolts. If so equipped, install a fork-mounted front
reflector now.
2. Align V-type brakes so their arms are parallel as the pad contacts the rim (Figure
30). Change the washer stacks to change the alignment.
3. Adjust the brake pad alignment. The pads should be parallel to the rim. The pad
surface should be in plane with the rim braking surface, and should not be above
or below the rim braking surface (Figure 31). The pads should have about 0.5 to
1mm toe-in to prevent squealing and allow a smooth progressive braking action.
• If the brakes seem grabby, additional toe-in can make them more progressive.
However, excessive toe in can decrease stopping power, as well as diminish the
pad life through uneven wear.
4. Tighten the pad attachment bolt.
5. Repeat for the other brake pad.
6. Check that the pad alignment is symmetric (Figure 31).
