12 TREK ASSEMBLY MANUAL 27 April 2012
Basic Assembly
Saddle
Saddle tilt has a great deal to do with rider comfort. Since initial impressions of
the bike during the test ride can be inuenced by the comfort, saddle tilt is very
important.
Although it is expected that the seat height would be set for a test ride, horizontal
adjustment of the saddle may not be. Placing the saddle horizontally by expectations
of rider size, and bike design, can also contribute to test ride comfort.
Tools required
• 4mm, 5mm, and/or 6mm allen wrench, or 14mm or 15mm open end wrench
• Level
To install the saddle
1. Lubricate the seat clamp bolt(s) with a light grease.
2. Install the saddle. Do not tighten the saddle clamp bolt(s) yet.
3. Place the bike on the floor, and level the saddle. If the seatpost does not offer the
adjustment necessary for a level saddle, set the saddle nose slightly down.
• For full suspension bikes, set the saddle nose slightly down so that it is level when
the bike sags.
4. Adjust the setback of the saddle. Move the saddle further back on big bikes, more
forward on small bikes. Make sure only the flat, straight section of the rails are
within the clamp of the seatpost.
5. Tighten the seat post clamp and the saddle clamp. Make sure the hardware, such
as washers, are correctly aligned on the seatpost.
6. Loosen the seatpost binder bolt.
7. Align the saddle and set the seat height. Make sure the minimum insertion mark
(Figure 29) is inside the frame.
8. Re-tighten the seatpost binder bolt.
