7 TREK ASSEMBLY MANUAL 27 April 2012
Basic Assembly
Handlebar
ATB-style handlebar
Follow these instructions to prepare an ATB-style handlebar assembly. A road
handlebar is covered in the next section.
Tools required
• 4mm, 5mm, and/or 6mm allen wrench
• Small phillips-head screwdriver
To install a stem
1. Apply a light grease to the threads and bearing surfaces of all clamp bolts of the stem.
2. Lubricate the contact surfaces of the stem.
• For a quill-type stem, apply grease to the thread of the expansion bolt and the
outside of the quill.
• For an Ahead-type stem on a metal steerer, apply oil to the inside surface of the
stem where it clamps the fork steerer. Do NOT apply oil a stem clamped to a
carbon steerer: see Parts Lubrication on page 72.
3. Install the stem.
4. Partially tighten the stem expander bolt or steerer clamp bolt(s). Don’t completely
tighten the stem yet. Final tightening will be done with the bike on the floor, to
check handlebar position.
To assemble the handlebar
1. If so equipped, loosely install the handlebar mounted reflector. Final tightening will
be done later.
2. Install the bars in the stem. If the stem has a removable end-cap make sure the
spaces between the cap and the stem are even (Figure 14).
3. Adjust the angle of the handlebar and partially tighten the bolts. The angle should
be pointing toward the saddle, or slightly higher.
4. Set the reach adjustment on the brake levers (Figure 15). Set the reach before
installing the levers on the bars. The brake lever reach should be shorter on small
bikes, longer on big bikes.
5. Slide the brake levers onto the handlebar.
6. Slide the shifters onto the handlebar.
7. Install the grips. Check that the grips do not rotate. If they do, follow the
instructions to fasten the grips on page 66.
8. Install any bar-ends.
