ROTWILD USER MANUAL | 2014
SHIFTING
Your ROTWILD mountain bike is equipped with a
chain gear shift system. The gears are distribut-
ed over chain rings on the crank and sprockets
on the rear wheel. The various gears are selected
according to the terrain or desired speed by the
shift levers mounted on the handlebars.
To avoid damage to the chain, sprockets
and derailleur system, only change gear when
the bike and pedals are in motion. Never back-
pedal while changing gear.
Tips on how to change gear correctly
To prevent unnecessary wear and damage to
your gear system, you should always change
gear smoothly and without excessive force
and always continue pedalling as long is the
chain is changing from one chain wheel or
sprocket to another.
Changing gear under load may shorten or se-
riously damage the chain, particularly when
changing gear with the front derailleur.
Always change gear in such a way that the
angle of the chain between the chain wheels
and sprockets is not too large. A combination
of a large chain wheel and a large sprocket,
for instance, provides no benefits when under
way, it only increases wear on the chain and
sprockets.
Left shift unit – front derailleur
With the shift mounted on the left handlebar,
you can select one of the 3 front chain rings
with the help of the front derailleur. The large
button shifts the chain to the next largest ring
(higher ratio), the small shift lever shifts the
chain to smaller rings (lower ratio).
Right shift unit – rear derailleur
With the shift unit mounted on the right handle-
bar, you can control the rear derailleur mounted
on the rear dropout. The large button shifts the
chain to the next largest sprocket (lower ratio),
the small shift lever shifts the chain to smaller
sprockets (higher ratio).
