A clean machine
Clean and descale your coff ee machine regular ly as
described in the chapter s ‘Cleaning’ and ‘Descaling’.
Remov e used coffee pods after brewing. If you hav e
not used the machine for some time, ush the machine
before you use it again (see section ‘Flushing the machine’
in chapter ‘Cleaning’).
This machine is intended for household use only and not
for professional use.

Important
Read this user manual carefully before y ou use the
machine and sav e it for future reference.
Danger
Never immerse the machine in water or any other
liquid.
W arning
Check if the voltage indicated on the bottom of
the machine corresponds to the local mains voltage
before you connect the machine.
This machine is not intended for use by persons
(including children) with reduced physical, sensor y
or mental capabilities, or lack of exper ience and
knowledge, unless they have been given super vision
or instr uction concerning use of the machine by a
per son responsible for their saf ety .
Children should be super vised to ensure that they
do not play with the machine.
Do not use the machine if the plug, the mains cord
or the machine itself is damaged.
If the mains cord is damaged, you must ha ve it
replaced by Philips, a ser vice centre authorised by
Philips or similar ly qualied per sons in order to av oid
a hazard.

Caution
Always return the machine to a ser vice centre
authorised by Philips for examination or repair .
Do not attempt to repair the machine yourself,
otherwise your guarantee becomes invalid.
Never put normal ground coffee or use torn pods in
the SENSEO
®
machine, as this causes it to become
blocked.
Do not use the machine in combination with a
transfor mer , as this could cause hazardous situations.
Always put the machine on a at and stab le surface .
Never let the machine operate unattended.
Do not use the machine at altitudes higher than
2200 metres abov e sea level.
The machine does not work at temper atures below
10°C .
Flush the coffee machine with fresh water before y ou
use it for the rst time (see chapter ‘Prepar ing the
machine for use’). This causes the boiler to ll with
water , which is essential for the machine to wor k
proper ly .
Do not use the SENSEO
®
machine in combination
with water softener s based on sodium exchange .
Philips strongly advises y ou to descale this SENSEO®
machine ever y 3 months. If the machine is not
descaled in time and according to the procedure
described in chapter ‘Descaling’, this may lead to
technical failures.
Never interr upt the descaling process.
Never use a descaling agent based on mineral acids
such as sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, sulphamic
acid and acetic acid (e.g. vinegar). These descaling
agents may damage y our SENSEO
®
coffee machine.
- Never turn your SENSEO
®
machine on its side.
Always k eep it in upr ight position, also dur ing
transpor t.
Electroma gnetic elds (EMF)
This machine complies with all standards regarding
electromagnetic elds (EMF). If handled proper ly
and according to the instr uctions in this user manual,
the machine is safe to use based on scientic evidence
availab le today .
Preparing the machine f or use
Y ou cannot bre w coffee if you ha ve not ushed the
SENSEO
®
coffee machine rst!
The ushing cycle causes the boiler to ll with water .
After this, the coffee machine is ready for use.
Flush the machine in the following wa y:
1 Tilt the water reservoir outwards and lift it out of
the machine (Fig. 2).
2 Fill the water reservoir with cold water up to the
MAX indication. (Fig. 3)
3 T o put the water reservoir back into the machine,
tilt it slightly and insert the bottom of the water
reservoir rst (1). Then press home the top part of
the water reservoir (2).
4 Move the lid r elease lever upwar ds (Fig. 4).
5 Open the lid (Fig. 5).
6 Put the 1-cup pod holder q or the 2-cup pod
holder qq in the machine without pod or
pods. (Fig. 6)
7 Close the lid and lock the lever (Fig. 7).
Note: T o make sure the le ver is locked pr operly, push it down
until it snaps home with a clic k. It is not possible to ush the
machine when the lid is not properly closed.
8 Put the plug in an earthed wall socket.
9 Put a bowl (with a capacity of at least 1500ml)
under the coffee spout to collect the water . (Fig. 8)
Note: Mak e sure the bowl is placed stably on the drip tray
or the foot of the machine to prevent it fr om wobbling or
toppling over during the ushing cyc le . Y ou can also use a
square or rectangular container .
10 Press the on/off button 3 (1) and then press the
1-cup button q and the 2-cup button qq briey
at the same time (2). (Fig. 9)
The boiler lls itself with water from the water
reservoir . This tak es some time (approx. 90 to 150
seconds). During the ushing cycle, the machine
produces mor e noise than during a regular br ewing
cycle.

Note: Before you use the machine for the rst time, c lean
the coffee spout, the cover of the coffee spout, the coffee
collector , the pod holder s and the water r eser voir in the
dishwasher or with hot w ater and some washing-up liquid.
Now y our Philips SENSEO

coffee machine is ready for
use.
Using the machine
If you only get a small quantity of coff ee or no coffee
at all out of the machine, you ha ve not ushed the
machine properl y before rst use. As a result, the boiler
is not or only partly lled. Flush the machine properl y
(see chapter ‘Preparing the machine for use’) before y ou
bre w another cup of coffee.
1 Fill the water reservoir with cold water up to
the MAX indication and put it back into the
machine. (Fig. 10)
Nev er pour milk, coffee, hot water or carbonated water
into the water reservoir .
q MIN: minimum amount of water required to brew
1 cup of SENSEO
®
coffee.
qq MIN: minimum amount of water required to
brew 2 cups of SENSEO
®
coffee.
A full reser voir allows y ou to make SENSEO
®
coffee
a number of times (up to
8 cups). This makes it unnecessar y to ll the water
reser voir each time y ou want to make a cup of
coffee.
2 Press the on/off button 3. (Fig. 11)
The light in the on/off button ashes slowly while
the water heats up. Heating up takes appr ox. 75
seconds.
The coffee machine is ready f or use when the light
in the on/off button lights up continuously .
Note: If the water r eser voir does not contain enough water
to brew one cup of SENSEO
®
coffee, the light in the on/off
button ashes rapidly and the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons
cannot be operated.
3 Move the lid r elease lever upwar ds (Fig. 4).
4 Open the lid (Fig. 5).
5 Place the appropriate pod holder in the machine.
Note: Mak e sure the pod holder is clean and the sieve in the
centre is not clogged, e .g. with loose coffee grains.
If you want to make one cup of SENSEO
®
coffee,
use 1 coffee pod in combination with the 1-cup pod
holder q and the 1-cup button q . (Fig. 12)
If you want to make tw o cups of SENSEO
®
coffee,
use 2 coffee pods in combination with the deeper
2-cup pod holder qq and press the 2-cup button
qq. (Fig. 13)
6 Place the SENSEO
®
coffee pod or pods pr operly in
the centre of the pod holder with the con vex side
pointing downwards.
Note: Use SENSEO
®
coffee pods fr om Douwe Egber ts
especially designed for your SENSEO
®
coffee machine for a
full and round taste.
Place 1 SENSEO
®
coffee pod in the 1-cup pod
holder q . (Fig. 14)
Place 2 SENSEO
®
coffee pods in the 2-cup pod
holder qq . (Fig. 15)
Note: Mak e sure the coffee in the pod or pods is e venly
distributed and press the pod or pods lightly into the pod
holder .
Nev er put normal ground coffee or use torn pods in
the machine, as this causes it to become blocked.
7 Close the lid and lock the lever (Fig. 16).
Make sure you push do wn the lid lever until it snaps
home with a click.
Note: It is not possible to brew coff ee when the lid is not
properly closed and the lid lever is not lock ed.
8 T o adjust the drip tra y to the size of the cups you
want to use, rst detach the drip tray b y sliding it
slightly upwards (1) and then pulling it to wards you
(2) (Fig. 17).
9 T o reattach the drip tra y , push it against the front of
the machine at the requir ed height (1). Make sur e
the top of the back plate of the drip tra y is on one
line with one set of guide lines. Then slide the drip
