• Clean the heads @, the capstans @ and the
pinch rollers © (fig. 8) with a cotton wool bud.
• You can also clean the capstans @ with d/yfilter
paper. Only use the aforementioned means and do
not touch the heads or capstans with sharp or metal
objects.
• Let everything dry before reconnecting the unit
to the mains.
The drive mechanism must not be
lubricated!
TROUBLE SHOOTING
If faults occur, it is often not necessary to consult your dealer or technical service department. You can
easily rectify a number of faults yourself using the list below.
1. The cassette deck does record
(the recording level indicators work
normally), but gives poor sound
quality (distortion) and/or too few
high-frequency tones (treble) or
differences between the left-hand
and right-hand channels DURING
PLAYBACK.
• These faults are almost always caused by DIRT on the HEADS
and CAPSTANS. Even the very best cassettes (irrespective of the
make or type of tape) can cause dirt to accumulate on the heads
or capstans. Check whether the heads and/or the capstans are
dirty and, if necessary, clean these parts as instructed in the
section on MAINTENANCE.
A/.B..The SBC 114 cleaning cassette is a good means of cleaning
the heads and capstans quickly. For cleaning the capstans
(important for good tape travel), you can also use dry filter paper
of the type used in coffee filters. For cleaning the pinch rollers, a
cotton wool bud moistened with a little alcohol can also be used.
2. The cassette deck does record
(the recording level indicators work
normally) but gives NO SOUND
WHATSOEVER during playback.
• The connection cables have come loose or have been wrongly
connected.
Check the connection cables: LINE-OUT ofthe cassettte deck
must be connected to TAPE IN of the amplifier.
• The amplifier may have been set wrongly. Check the amplifier:
the selector switch must be at 'CASS', TAPE',
TAPE1',
or
TAPE 2' and the volume control must not be 'closed' or at
'MIN'.
3. The cassette holder does not
open.
• The cassette deck is in the record or playback mode. First press
the 'STOP' button and then the 'EJECT' button.
4. The cassette cannot be inserted
or the cassette holder cannot be
closed.
• The cassette is not correctly positioned in the holder or may be
upside down. Insert the cassette properly in the cassette holder
as shown in fig. 4.
5. The recording button does not
work. • There is no cassette in the deck, or a cassette is being used
which is protected against recording (for example a 'musicasset-
te').
Try a different or new cassette, or - if the old recording is to
be erased - close the opening in the back of the cassette with a
piece of adhesive tape (see also fig. 3).
