Variants
Variant for an odd number of players: the Courtesan.
In case of an uneven number of players, the ravishing courtesan joins the game.
Principle of the game:
The Courtesan’s aim is to become the most elegant with the help of all the
Gentlemen. If she succeeds, she brings victory to the Gentleman who has courted
her the most. Be careful not to neglect her, as she can cause quite a scandal and
ruin the reputation of those who looked down on her…
Setup:
The player with no team takes on the role of the Courtesan (a Lady without
a Gentleman)
With 5 players, place 3 contracts on the ‘Stock Exchange’ side; with 7 or 9
players, place 4 contracts on the ‘Stock Exchange’ side.
With 5 players, the Gentlemen each begin with £1,500 instead of £500;
with 7 players, they each begin with £1,200 and with 9 players they each
begin with £1,000.
The Courtesan receives color markers for each team and and places them
in front of herself.
The Courtesan sits with the Ladies on the ‘Boutique’ side, without a
Gentleman opposite her if possible.
For the rest of the setup the Courtesan follows the same rules as the other Ladies.
Changes to different phases:
Ladies’ side: Afternoon:
If the Courtesan is in the same boutique as other Ladies, she is always served
second, no matter how many Ladies are present or the Number tokens that are
owned by their Gentlemen.
Evening phase:
Before the Ladies present their purchases to their Gentlemen, the
Courtesan distributes hers to the Gentlemen, as she wishes.
The Gentlemen then receive the purchases from their Ladies. They pay
for the purchases of their Lady and/or the Courtesan, according to the
following rule:
‘You must buy your Lady at least as many purchases as the Courtesan.
Example: Benoit pays for a card for Alexandra, who is the courtesan. As he has
done this, he must pay for a card for Melanie, his Lady.
For each purchase presented by the Courtesan, the Gentleman may choose
to pay it or give it back to the Courtesan.
From all the purchases the courtesan hopes to make (that is, the different
Wardrobe or Servant cards that she picked in phase 2), she must select up
to three cards and discard all the others.
The purchases that Gentlemen make for her are placed face-up in front
of the Courtesan, with a Colour marker on each from the team of the
Gentleman who paid for it.
At the end of the game, all purchases that have not been paid for by a Gentleman
are discarded.
The Ball
If the Courtesan is the most elegant, she wins along with the Gentleman who
bought her the most expensive gifts (the ones that are worth the most Elegance
points). In case of a tie, she wins with the richest of those Gentlemen.
If the Courtesan is the least elegant (in last place), she makes a scandal and takes
down with her the team of the Gentleman who gave her the fewest Elegance
points, and in case of a tie, the poorest of those teams. As in the standard game
the winner is the team with the Lady who is the most elegant at the Ball from
the remaining team.
In case of a tie between the Courtesan and one or more Ladies, the
Courtesan is always considered the most elegant.
Variant: Gossip
In order to spice up the game up a bit, you can include Gossip rules. Add the
Gossip cards. This variant is best enjoyed when all players fully take on the roles
of the characters that they are playing.
