one rises any more. In other words, all the players have bet the same amount, or
are no longer playing.
The players who have placed blinds can initially count these chips towards their
rst-round bets. If the stake is raised, they only need to add the difference in
order to stay in the game.
After everyone has bet, the dealer places the top card of the deck to one side
(this is known as the ‘Burn’ card). He then places the next three cards face up on
the table. These three cards are known as the ‘fl op’. These are the fi rst three of
the total of fi ve community cards which are used in the game. The players must
form the best possible poker hand with these community cards and the two cards
dealt to each of the players personally. (See the ‘Value of the Poker Hand’ chapter
later in these rules.)
This is then followed by a new betting round. The dealer again places the top card
to one side. A fourth card is then placed face up on the table; this is known as the
‘turn’. This is followed by another round of betting. Finally, a fi fth and last card is
placed face up on the table, known as the ‘River, which is then followed by the
nal round of betting.
Winner:
If only one player bets and all the other players abandon their hands (fold), the re-
maining player wins. He wins the total stake and does not need to show his cards.
After the fi nal round of betting, the hands of the players who are still playing are
compared to one another, which is known as the ‘showdown’. The player with the
best poker hand wins the full stake.
If there are players with hands of the same value, the stake is divided between
these players.
