In order to continue playing, the player to the left of the Big Blind must bet at
least as much as the big blind. This is known as a ‘Call’. He can also raise the bet
(‘Raise’) or, if he thinks his chances of winning are small, he can abandon his hand
and place his two cards face down to one side. This is known as a ‘Fold’. The
player then no longer participates. Play moves clockwise, and each player decides
what he will do on each turn. The betting round ends when no-one raises any
more. In other words, all the players have bet the same amount, or are no longer
playing. The players who have placed blinds count these chips towards their fi rst-
round bets. If the stake has been raised, they only need to add the difference in
order to stay in the game.
TIP: It is therefore possible to no longer take part in the game in the fi rst round,
before betting has started. If you are sitting in the small Blind position, this will
only cost you your fi rst bet. The big Blind costs you double the minimum bet. In all
other cases, it doesn’t cost you anything.
After the betting round has fi nished, the dealer turns over the fi rst three cards (the
‘fl op’) of the community cards, from left to right. This is then followed by a new
betting round. After everyone has decided what they are doing, the fourth card
(the ‘turn’) is turned over. This is followed by another round of betting. After the
fth and last community card, known as the ‘River, has been turned over, the fi nal
round of betting begins.
Winner
If only one player bets and all other players abandon their hands (fold), the re-
maining player wins. He wins the total stake and does not need to show his cards.
After the fi nal round of betting, the hands of the players who are still playing are
compared to one another, which is known as the ‘showdown’. The player with the
best poker hand wins the full stake.
If there are players with hands of the same value, the stake is divided between
these players.
