Texas Hold’em Rules

Preparations:
At the start of the game, the Buy-in is determined for all the players. This is the
xed number of poker chips that each player can buy at the start of the game. The
total number of poker chips can also be divided evenly between all the players.
The dealer is determined by drawing cards. The player drawing the highest card
is the fi rst dealer. The dealer position moves clockwise one player with each new
hand. The dealer is identi ed by the dealer button placed on the table in front of
the dealer.
The game
The aim
The aim of the game is to form the best possible hand to win the pot (the total
number of poker chips bet by the players). A hand consists of the highest possible
combination of fi ve cards chosen from two personal cards (‘Hole Cards’ or ‘Down
Cards’) and the fi ve cards (‘Community Cards’) which are visible and available to
everyone.
How to play
Before the cards are dealt, the player to the left of the dealer must place a previ-
ously agreed ‘ante’ bet. This players position is referred to as the ‘Small Blind’.
The player to the left of the Small Blind position must place a bet which is twice as
much as the small blind. This position is known as the ‘big Blind’. These two bets
ensure that there are always chips to be won.
The dealer deals each player two personal cards, one at a time, face down
(‘closed’) on the table. The fi rst player to be dealt a card is the player to the left of
the Dealer (at the Small Blind position). The player to the left of the big Blind posi-
tion places the fi rst bet.
In order to stay in the game, each player must, in turn, bet at least as much as the
player to the right of him. This is known as a ‘Call’. A player can also then raise the
bet (‘Raise’) or, if he thinks his chances of winning are small, he can abandon his
hand and place his two personal cards face down to one side. This is known as a
‘Fold’. The player then no longer participates. The betting round ends when no-
