Variation: The color fish
The preparation and procedure of the game are as in the basic game,
except for the following changes:
The players again distribute eight fish (four dotted and four striped ones)
at random on the surface of the sea.
Important: This time the fish have to be placed with their dotted and
striped side face up on the game board.
Whoever has seen a whale most recently begins the game and slips in to
the role of Paula, rolling the fish die.
The die shows what fish you can catch. After rolling the die the other
players turn over the hourglass.
What appears on the die?
•A yellow, green, red or blue fish?
You may catch only fish of these colors.
•A dotted or a striped fish?
You may catch only fish with the pattern shown.
Watch out! You may roll the die as many times you want, thus
determining a new color or a new pattern. It is permitted to roll the die
various times in a row without collecting fish. If, however, you catch a
wrong fish the other players immediately shout: “Stop, Betty!” and your
turn is over.
The last grain has passed through the hourglass?
Whoever notices it, shouts loudly: “Stop, Betty!” Paula immediately has
to put aside the cord, and can put in front of her all the fish Betty has
caught. The remaining ones on the game board are returned to the pro-
visions. Then it’s the turn of the player in a clockwise direction to slip into
the role of Betty.
End of the Game
The game ends when each player has had their turn. The players pile up
the fish caught. Whoever has the highest pile, wins the game. In the
event of a draw there are several winners.
