Interesting penguin knowledge for older children
Most penguins live in Antarctica, on the southern hemisphere of the
Earth. They belong to the bird family, but cannot fly. Instead, they are
outstanding swimmers and can dive deep down into the ocean. There,
penguins hunt for food. They use their strong wings to propel them-
selves through the water. When penguins want to move on land, they
waddle on their two feet or slide over the ice on their bellies.
A penguin’s feather dress is black on the back and white on the belly.
It is incredibly thick and keeps the penguins warm, even in freezing
ocean waters. Not all penguins look the same. There are more than
15 different kinds of penguins of varying sizes. Fairy penguins are
about 40 cm high, so they can just fit under your dining room chair.
Emperor penguins are the largest, reaching 115 cm, about the same
size as a 4-year-old child.
When two penguins meet, they greet each other by gently rubbing
their heads together. Some penguins breed on land. In Antarctica,
the penguin parents hold the egg on their feet and keep it warm
under a fold in their belly. The freshly hatched babies sit in this
warm shelter until they are ready to leave the ‘nest’.

The children let their arms hang by their sides, bending their
hands up and out. Now waddle with small steps around the
room. When two children meet, they carefully rub heads or
noses in greeting.
