I più grandicelli imparano a conoscere i pinguini

La maggior parte dei pinguini vive nell'emisfero meridionale, in Antar-

tide. Sono uccelli, anche se non volano. In compenso, sono eccellenti

nuotatori e possono scendere sott'acqua a molti metri di profondità.

E' là che i pinguini vanno a cercare le loro prede, servendosi delle loro

robuste ali per spostarsi e avanzare. Quando sono sulla terraferma, i

pinguini camminano dondolando sulle loro zampe. Possono anche

scivolare sul ghiaccio sdraiati sulla pancia.

Le loro piume sono nere sul dorso e bianche sulla pancia. Sono molto

ﬁtte e li tengono caldi anche nell'acqua fredda. Non tutti i pinguini

hanno lo stesso aspetto: ci sono più di 15 specie diverse, che variano

anche nelle dimensioni. I pinguini nani sono alti circa 40 cm, più o

meno come la seduta di una sedia. I pinguini imperatore sono i più

grandi e raggiungono 115 cm di altezza, più o meno quanto un bim-

bo di 4 anni.

Quando una coppia di pinguini si incontra, i due si salutano stroﬁ-

nandosi la testa l’uno con l’altro. Parecchie specie di pinguini covano

sulla terra. In Antartide i genitori portano l'uovo sulle zampe, riscal-

dandolo grazie a una piega addominale. Lì restano anche i pulcini

appena usciti dai gusci ﬁnché non diventano indipendenti.

i bambini stanno con le braccia a penzoloni, allargano

bene le dita delle mani verso l'esterno e camminano

nella stanza con piccoli passi, dondolando. Ogni volta

che si incontrano, si strusciano con cautela l’uno con

l’altro i nasi o le teste.

• Fare una gita allo zoo più vicino per osservare insieme

i pinguini.
