REASONS FOR A REDUCED BRAKING EFFECT
There is often the danger of slipping on wet and slippery roads by braking too hard.
The tyres can slip easily under excessive breaking. This braking effect is not so bad the
dryer the conditions. Often, you cannot avoid braking hard, even though you are dri-
ving appropriately. In this case you should use the rear brake first, followed by the
front brake.
WARNING! Never use just the front brake, regardless of weather conditions.
Always use the front and the rear brake together to avoid the wheels from slipping.
A general rule when it is wet is that the braking distance is 60% longer than under dry
conditions.
TYRES AND RIMS
Tyres can only perform very well when they have the correct pressure. The correct tyre
pressure helps to avoid damages to the tyre. The ideal tyre pressure for each tyre is
printed on the side of each tyre or on the label.
The tyre pressure should be checked regularly and if necessary pumped up to the pro-
ducers recommended pressure.
For Example:
Pump up to minimum 3.5Bar (50PSi) maximum 5.5Bar (85PSi)
RIMS AND RIM WEARING
Brake blocks of rim brakes are subject of wear. This level of wear depends on the way
the bicycle is used. When riding in mountain areas or for sports use it is possible that
the changing intervals of the brake blocks are shorter as they are more subject of
wear.
When fine cracks occur or the rims flange is deforming when increasing the tyre pres-
sure, it is an indicator of increased wear.
In this case you should return the rim to your specialist dealer and change it
immediately.
