16. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
16.1 The flame sensing device.
For your safety, your fireplace is fitted with a
mechanism, which will automatically shut off the
gas supply to the fire if the pilot flame goes out. It
will also shut off the gas supply if the vent is
blocked or if there is not enough ventilation.
This mechanism incorporates a probe, which senses
that the heat from the pilot flame is correct. If this
probe is cool, the device will prevent any gas flow
unless the sliding control button is held at the
ignition position.
The fireplace is also fitted with a mechanism, which
will automatically shut off the fire if the vent is
blocked.
If this safety mechanism frequently shuts off the gas,
get expert advice.
16.2 Lighting
Full lighting instructions are on the next page.
Note that when first turned on the flames will
predominantly blue. The coals will take time to
warm up. Although some glow will be seen after
approximately ten minutes, the full visual effect will
only be apparent after a somewhat longer time.
Lighting with a long match
In the unlikely event of failure of the ignition spark,
the pilot can be lit by a long match. Insert the match
alongside the left side wall of the fire box and
operating the slide control as described in the
normal lighting instructions.
16.3 Cleaning
Turn the fire off and allow it to cool before
attempting any cleaning. Note that the fire will
retain heat for some time after it has been turned off.
Metal parts
Clean the metal parts with a slightly damp cloth and
then dry. Do not use abrasive cleaners, they could
scratch the surface.
Coals and ceramic firebox walls
Dust etc. Can be brushed from the coals after
removing the safety guard. We suggest that you
remove the coals in the reverse order to that shown
fitting instructions. Make sure that no particles are
brushed into the ceramic burner slots.
Ceramic burner
Remove any dust or other foreign matter from the
solid areas of the burner with a dry soft brush. Be
careful not to brush any particles into the open slots.
Remove any particles from the slots with a vacuum
cleaner fitted with a soft brush attachment. Do not
poke wire, etc. into the slots in the burner.
16.4 Checks
16.4.1 A periodic visual check of the pilot and burner
flames should be made. Compare the burner flames
to those illustrated in figure 32. The pilot flame
should be visible between the coals near the front
left corner as illustrated in figure 33.
Check after the fire has been on for at least 30
minutes.
16.4.2 Keep area in front of the ashpan cover clear to
prevent obstruction of air flow to appliance for
combustion.
16.4.3 The flow of combustion and ventilation air must
not be obstructed. The venting system should be
examined by a qualified agency regularly. We
suggest annually.
