53 TREK ASSEMBLY MANUAL 27 April 2012
Supporting Information
Chainline
The chainline is the distance from the center of the chainwheel plane to the center
of the frame plane. Chainline is aected by the bottom bracket shell width, bottom
bracket axle length, and crankset. As additional considerations, the front derailleur
must be able to shift the chain to the position of the chainrings, and adequate
clearance must be maintained between the crankset and the frame. If the chainline is
incorrect, shifting may be sluggish, inaccurate, or the chain may fall o unexpectedly.
There are many standards for chainline:
• Road bikes
Double chainrings 43 +/-1.0mm
Triple chainrings 45 +/-1.0mm
• Mountain bikes (and most hybrid bikes)
Small diameter seat tubes 47.5 +0mm/-1.0mm
Large diameter seat tubes 50.0 +0mm/-1.0mm
There are also many exceptions: track bikes, downhill bikes, and cyclocross bikes.
To check the chainline
Measure the distance between the frame and the large chainring (Figure 96), and note
this distance as ‘A’. Measure the distance between the small chainring and the frame,
and note this distance as ‘B’. Measure the diameter of the downtube at the chainrings,
and note this distance as ‘C’. Calculate the chainline as (A+B)/2 + C/2 + 1.
If the result is greater than 52.0, install a shorter bottom bracket axle. With the new
bottom bracket installed, check that there is at least 3.0mm clearance between any
part of the frame’s chainstays and either crankarm (ends of the cranks, and all three
chainrings). Re-adjust the front derailleur.
