Basic Assembly
Function Check
After assembly, the bike and all its systems should be checked for function. If any
item fails the check, refer back to that section and readjust the part.
Wheels check
The wheels are fully inserted in the dropouts.
The wheels are true.
The wheels are properly centered in the frame or fork.
The front wheel is not loose.
The rear wheel is not loose.
• The tires are inated to the pressure listed on the tire.
Saddle check
The saddle cannot be twisted laterally, or moved up and down.
Headset check
The headset is not loose. There is no looseness when the front wheel of the bike is
bounced on the ground, or when the bike is rocked back and forth with the front
brake applied.
• The headset is not tight. With the front wheel o the ground, the handlebar turns
back and forth with no roughness or noise.
Handlebar and stem check
• The stem is rmly attached. With the front wheel between your legs, the handlebar
cannot be rotated from side to side.
• The handlebar is rmly attached. The handlebar cannot be rotated in the stem
clamp.
• When the handlebar is rotated the cables or housing do not interfere with the bike,
or get caught or pinched.
Controls check
The shift levers do not rotate on the handlebar.
The brake levers do not rotate on the handlebar.
The bar ends do not rotate on the handlebar.
Hand brake check
• The front and rear brake pads are aligned on the rims.
• The brake levers cannot touch the handlebar under hard braking.
• The brakes stop the wheels. There is adequate stopping power and control; the
bike stops in approximately 15 feet from approximately 15MPH and is easily
controllable.
