3 TREK ASSEMBLY MANUAL 27 April 2012
Basic Assembly
Wheels
To save time, make sure the wheels are properly prepared and installed before
adjusting brakes or derailleurs.
Tools required
• #20 Torx wrench (if equipped with disc brakes)
• 14mm and/or 15mm open end wrench (if equipped with bolt-on wheel)
• Cassette lockring tool
• Large adjustable wrench
To prepare the front wheel
1. Check the bearing adjustment of the hub and adjust as necessary. The axle should
spin freely without end play, or with high-end hubs using a quick-release, a very
slight end play. The force of the quick-release will slightly compress the bearings.
2. Check that the spoke reflectors are correctly aligned and tight. If the reflectors
are loose in the wheel, they can make noise. They should be concentric with the
rim and vertical (Figure 6). Make sure they are pressed tightly to the spokes, with
pressure applied between the spokes.
3. Check that any brake disc attachment bolts are tight.
4. Lubricate the quick-release and install it in the wheel. Place a drop of oil where
the lever rotates in the quick-release head, and lightly grease any exposed sliding
surfaces (Figure 7).
• For a threaded axle, apply a small amount of bearing grease to the threads.
5. Install the wheel in the dropouts.
6. Seat the quick-release. Open and close the quick-release at least three times to
make sure the quick-release has fully set into the paint and the quick-release parts
have compressed.
7. Check that the wheel is true. Spin the wheel and watch where the rim passes
through the brake pads, or the frame. If the rim moves more than 1.0mm laterally
or vertically, follow the instructions to true a wheel on page 62.
8. Check that the wheel is properly centered between the fork blades.
• If the wheel is off center, check the dish and true the wheel as necessary.
• If the wheel is off center but dished correctly, make sure the fork is in good
conditiona and that there is no debris or paint inside the dropout that might be
interfering with the hub axle.
• If the wheel is still off center, check with your manager regarding possible solutions.
