7.1 Network settings
Further information: about routers, SSID, MAC & IPs
The brief explanations listed here, together with the glossary in the appendix, are desi-
gned to help you better understand the decisions and settings that need to be made in
your network.
Some points are only relevant in connection with a wireless network.
Refer to this chapter as needed.
7.1.1. Changing options on the router
In any case it is necessary that you are familiar with the router - or the administrator of
the router - so that you can make settings and know how to handle the device. You only
need to enter a specific
address (e.g. 192.168.0.1) into the web browser to access a convenient interface whe-
re you can set all options.
SSID broadcast (WIFI)
As is also listed in the technical glossary, SSID is an abbreviation for the network name,
so all wireless network devices within range will be shown to you: here is a network with
this identifier. However, on some routers, it is also possible to suppress the display of this
name. This option is usually called SSID Broadcast and can be enabled or disabled. If the
broadcast is switched off, you must know this name in order to enter it manually during
setup on the DABMAN i300 CD.
Device ID: the MAC address
The MAC address is a unique identifier of each network
device. These addresses are permanently burned into the devices and therefore almost
unchangeable.
That is why this identifier is suitable for configuring a router in such a way that it only
allows devices with a noted identifier to access the network or the Internet. In this case,
the router would have to be given this MAC address of the DABMAN device so that it
can fulfil its purpose and use the network connection and access data in the network. The
respective DABMAN’s ID is located on a sticker on the back of the device.
