6.2.3. Checking the Chain Tension
In the case of multi-speed hubs which are not equipped with a sprung
load chain tensioner the tension of the drive chain has to be checked oc-
casionally, i.e. every 1,000 km (600 miles) according to use. The amount
of play, midway between chainring and sprocket, should not be more
than two centimetres.
6.2.3.1. Readjusting the Chain Tension on Bicycles with
Adjustable Drop-Outs
To adjust the chain tension the bolted connections of the rear wheel hub
have to be released on both sides. Pull the rear wheel to the rear and
retighten the rear wheel hub on both sides. Check the chain tension.
Make sure the amount of play midway between sprockets and chainring
is not more than two centimetres.
After adjusting the proper chain tension tighten the rear wheel axle bolt
to a torque of 30-45 Nm by using a torque wrench.
The Gears
Danger:
Insufficient chain tension
can make the chain come
off, thus resulting in an
immediate loss of pedalling
resistance. The loss of drive
resulting thereof can result
in a loss of control and in
an accident with serious
consequences.
Danger:
Check regularly the reliable
fit of the axle nuts on the
frame.
Caution:
An over tensioned chain
increases chain wear and
chainring wear consider-
ably.
6.3. The Pinion Transmission
The Pinion 18-speed transmission of your STEVENS bicycle is directly on
the frame. There is only one sprocket with freewheel at the rear wheel.
Please note that this is the only way you can operate the Pinion. The
combination with a fixed hub, derailleur gears, multi-speed hubs or a
hub with back-pedal brake is not provided. Other combinations than
what is built in by the manufacturer can result in failure and accident.
All 18 speeds can be shifted through with one twist grip. The speed
indicator in form of arrows on the grip and numbers on the twist grip
indicate the chosen speed.
In principle, you can shift through several gears with one action.
Gear shifting is possible and good for the Pinion transmission in station-
ary or during back pedalling of the cranks.
