Before You Begin

• Itishelpful toknow thatyouwillalmostalwaysconnect theRELto the inputon therearpanel labeled

“HIGH-LEVELINPUT.”This conneconismade usingthesupplied 34’10” (10meters)cable, thebareleads

ofwhichconnecttothespeakeroutputterminalsofthepowerampliﬁer.Theeasyandfoolproofconnecon

attheREL isdone withaNeutrik Speakonconnector. Thepurpose ofconnecngtothe speakeroutput

terminalsisone ofthe uniquesecretsofREL’ssuccess. Byconnecngtothe high-levelinput onthe REL

fromthe ampliﬁer,youbuild forwardthesonic signatureof yourmainsystem,including thetonalbalance

andming cuesofthe enreelectronicschain. Inthisway, theRELis fedthe exactsignal thatis fed tothe

mainspeakers.

• Whenpossible,the RELshould beplaced in oneof thecornersbehindthe speakers. Remember,we are

dealingwith trueLOWbass pressurizaonwith RELs.Lowbass pressurizaonbelow40Hz isbestderived

fromcorner placement,wherethe mostlinearand eﬃcientlow basscanbe produced.

High-levelconnecon, usingtheenclosed cablewiththe NeutrikSpeakonconnector,is alwaystheﬁrst

choicecomparedwithlow-levelconnecon.Thisconneconcanbemadewithoutaﬀecngtheperformance

ofthe ampliﬁerbecausethe REL’s ampliﬁerinputimpedance is150,000 ohms,ineﬀectnotproducingany

addionaldemand whatsoeveron therestofyoursystem.When connecngtoahome cinemasystem

wherea.1/LFE channeloutput ispresent,connect asinglephono cablebetweenthesub outputof the

processor/receiverandthe .1/LFEinput jackon theREL.

1 Posioning: TheopmalposionforaRELisinoneofthecornersbehindthemainspeakers.Thisposion

provides9 dBof mechanicalampliﬁcaonand allowsforthe mostlineartrue lowbasswavelaunch,

owingtothe abilitytotune theRELto thelongestdistancein theroominordertoproducethe longest,

therefore lowest,bass waves.

2 The Process: To begintheset-upprocess,choose apiece ofmusic that hasarepevebassline thatis

verylowin frequency.Werecommend track4 fromthe soundtrack toSneakers (ColumbiaCK 53146).

Thishas arepevebass drumthroughoutthatgivesyouplenty ofmeto movethe wooferaround,

butmoreimportantly, thevenuewasquitelargeforthis recordingand thereforeit hasa verydeep and

large-scalebass signature.This typeof trackis perfectforthe set-up processandshould beplayed atthe

highestreasonablelevelexpectedforsystemplayback.
