Prepare the power supply ( pages 12 and 13).
1 Slide the lock release and open the
outer cover.
2 Press [PUSH OPEN] to open the
disc lid and insert a disc with the
side you want to play label up.
Close the disc lid by hand.
3 Press and hold [1, ON] to
start play.
The unit comes on automatically.
See below if a menu appears.
4 Adjust the volume.
Using menus: Basic operations
e.g.:
Press the numeric buttons to
select an item.
Or
Use the cursor jockey [3, 4, 2, 1] to
highlight an item and press [ENTER].
Selecting an item numbered 10 and
over with numeric buttons
e.g. 10: [S10]>[1]>[0]
e.g. 25: [S10]>[2]>[5]
Other menu operations
Operation of menus differs from disc to disc, so
read the discs instructions for details.
[9] : To move to the next menu
[:] : To return to the previous menu
[TOP MENU]: To return to the first menu
[MENU] : To show menus
[RETURN] : To show menus

To turn the unit on
The unit can be turned on as follows.
OOn the main unitN
Slide [ON/OFF, HOLD] to
ON/OFF until the display
is turned on.
OOn the remote controlN
Press [Í].
The [Í] indicator on the unit flashes to indi-
cate the unit is on when the monitors mode
is set to 4 (Off) ( page 21) or the outer
cover is closed.
To turn the unit off
The unit can be turned off as follows. The
[Í] indicator lights when you are using the
AC adaptor.
OOn the main unitN
Slide [ON/OFF, HOLD] to
ON/OFF until the display
is turned off.
OOn the remote controlN
Press [Í].
Note
You cannot use the remote control to turn
the unit on when it is being powered by
the battery pack.
The unit automatically turns off after being
stopped for 15 minutes (5 minutes when
the battery pack is being used).
(Auto power-off function)
To prevent accidental operation
Slide [ON/OFF, HOLD] to
HOLD.
In the hold mode, the unit does not respond
when you press the buttons. If you press a
button in the hold mode, ' appears
on the units display and the [Í] indicator
flashes.
To release:
Slide [ON/OFF, HOLD] to ON/OFF.
$ appears on the LCD
This indicates that an operation is not allowed by
the unit or disc at that time.
When the disc ends
If you have finished using the unit, turn it off to
conserve power ( page 15, To turn the unit
off).

During play
Press [].
The position you stopped play at is record-
ed by the unit when 1 is flashing on the
units display.
While 1 is flashing on the units display,
press [1] to start play from where you
stopped it (Resume function).
If you are playing DVDs, the following dis-
play also appears.
Pressing [1] while this is displayed acti-
vates the Chapter Review feature.
If you do not press [1], the message dis-
appears and play starts from where you
stopped it.
Chapter Review:
The beginning portions of each chapter up
to the current one are played. Full play re-
sumes from the point where you stopped
play. (Chapter Review feature works only
within a title.)
To cancel Resume function
Press [].
Note
The resume function does not work if the
discs play time is not displayed.
The resume position remains in memory
even if the unit is off.
It is cleared if you open the disc lid.

Note
The surface of the unit may become warm if it is
used for a long time, but this is normal and not
an indication of malfunction.
The disc is still spinning while a menu is on the
LCD. Press [] if you have finished viewing.
When [1] is pressed immediately after a DVD
disc is loaded into the tray, play will take a little
longer to start than when [1] is pressed from
the stop mode. It usually takes a little while be-
fore picture and sound appear on the television
after [1] is pressed, this is not a malfunction of
the unit.
