Bar indicator : for treadwearisintegrated
into the tire tread.
Treadwear indicators(TWI) are required by
law. Six indicatorsare positioned on the tire
tread. Theyare visible once the treaddepth is
approximately á in (1.6 mm). If this is the
case,the tire is so worn that it mustbe
replaced.
Selecting, mounting and replacing
tires

Only mount tiresand wheelsofthe same
typeand make.
R
Only mount tiresofthe correct size onto
the wheels.
R
Breakinnew tiresatmoderate speeds for
the first60miles (100 km).Theyonly reach
theirfullperformance afterthis distance.

Do not drive with tireswhich have too little
treaddepth, as this significantlyreduces
the traction on wetroads (hydroplaning).
R
Replace the tiresaftersix years at the lat-
est, regardless of wear.
Winter operation
General notes
Have your vehicle winterproofedataqualified
specialist workshopatthe onsetofwinter.
Observe the notes in the "Changing awheel"
section (Y page 270).
Drivingwithsummer tires
At temperatures below 45 ‡(+7†), summer
tires experience aconsiderable loss in elas-
ticity and therefore traction and braking
power. Change the tires on yourvehicle to
M+S tires. Using summertires at very cold
temperatures couldcause cracks to form,
therebydamaging the tires permanently.
Mercedes-Benz cannot acceptresponsibility
for this type of damage.
M+S tires

WARNING
M+S tires with atire tread depth of less than
ã in (4 mm)are not suitablefor use in winter
and do not provide sufficient traction. There is
arisk of an accident.
M+S tires with atread depth of less than ã in
(4 mm) must be replaced immediately.
At temperatures below 45 ‡(+7†), use win-
ter tires or all-season tires. Both typesoftire
are identified by the M+S marking.
Only winter tires bearing the i snowflake
symbol in addition to the M+S marking pro-
vide the best possiblegrip in wintry road con-
ditions. Only these tires will allow driving
safety systems such as ABS and ESP
®
to
function optimally in winter. Thisisbecause
these tires were specifically developed for
driving in snow.
Use M+S tires of the same make and tread on
allwheels to maintain safe handling charac-
teristics.
Always observe the maximumpermissible
speedspecified for the M+S tires you have
mounted.
When you have mounted the M+S tires:
