The rearaxlelocks when:

the engine is not running

the engine stalls while the vehicle is being
towed

there is amalfunction in the power supply
or the vehicle'selectricalsystem
There is ariskofanaccident.
In the event of abreakdown, youshould
always havethe vehicle transported.

WARNING
If the brake system or power steering is mal-
functioning and your vehicle is then towed
away,significantly more effort may be
required to steerand brake than is normally
required.There is ariskofanaccident.
In such cases, use atow bar. Beforetowing,
make surethat the steering movesfreely.

WARNING
If the weightofthe vehicle to be towedortow-
startedisgreater than the permissible gross
weightofyourvehicle:

the towing eyecould detach itself
R
the vehicle/trailer combinationcould roll-
over.
There is ariskofanaccident.
Whentowing or tow-starting another vehicle,
its weightshouldnot be greater than the per-
missible grossweightofyourvehicle.

Use the SmartKeyinstead of the Start/
Stop button whentowing the vehicle.
Start the engine and keep it running. Turn
the SmartKeytoposition 2 in the ignition.
Set the transmission to N using the E-
SELECT lever. Make sure that youthen
leave the SmartKeyinposition 2.
Check the transmission positioninthe
instrument cluster.

Make sure that the electric parking brake
is released.Ifthe electric parking brake is
faulty,visit aqualified specialist workshop.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that youuse
an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for
this purpose.
!
Whentowing, pull away slowlyand
smoothly.Ifthe tractive power is too high,
the vehicles could be damaged.
!
Only secure the tow rope or tow baratthe
towing eyes. Otherwise, the vehicle could
be damaged.
!
Do not usethe towing eyes for recovery
purposes as this could damagethe vehicle.
If in doubt, recover the vehicle with acrane.
!
The vehicle can be towedamaximum of
30 miles (50km). The towing speed of
30 mph (50 km/h)mustnot be exceeded.
If the vehicle hastobetowedmore than
30 miles (50km), the entire vehicle mustbe
raised and transported.
!
Do not tow with sling-typeequipment.
Thiscould damagethe vehicle.
