F7 der SOO-Line mit Caboose.
Zu einem wahren Verkaufsschlager bei den US-Bahnen
entwickelten sich die zwischen 1949 und 1953 produzierten
„Bulldogs“ der Baureihe F7/FP7 von General Motors EMD.
Hier bewahrheitet sich der Spruch, dass es einfacher ist,
die Bahngesellschaften aufzuzählen, die keine F7-Einheiten
gekauft hatten, als sich an alle zu erinnern, welche die F7 in
ihre Dienste nahmen. Die F7 waren überall! 50 Bahngesell-
schaften kauften die F7 neu und bei mehr als 75 nordameri-
kanischen Bahnen leisteten sie schließlich ihren Dienst.
Interessant ist die Geschichte der SOO Line Railroad: Promi-
nente Geschäftsleute aus Minneapolis gründeten 1883 die
Minneapolis, Sault Ste. Marie and Atlantic Railroad, welche
schnell aufgrund der Aussprache von „Sault“ als SOO Line
ein Begriff wurde. Die SOO Line sollte vor allem die Getrei-
deprodukte von Minnesotas Farmern und Mühlen schnell zu
den östlichen Märkten befördern. Schon 1888 erfolgte die
Umbenennung in Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie
Railroad und das Streckennetz erweiterte sich sukzessive
über den oberen Mittelwesten bis nach Kanada. 1909
übernahm die SOO Line in Form eines Leasing-Vertrages
die Wisconsin Central Railway. Schließlich fusionierten
1961 die Minneapolis, St. Paul und Sault Ste. Marie Railroad
offiziell mit der Wisconsin Central Railway und der Duluth,
South Shore und Atlantic Railroad unter dem neuen Namen
SOO Line Railroad. 1985 erwarb die SOO Line die Reste der
Pleite gegangenen Milwaukee Road. In den 1990er Jahren
übernahm die Canadian Pacific Railway als langjährige An-
teilseignerin vollständig die Bahngesellschaft und beendete
so ihre Existenz als eigenständiges Unternehmen.

The class F7/FP7 „Bulldogs“ from General Motors EMD built
between 1949 and 1953 developed into a real sales hit on
American railroads. Here the saying was proven that it is
simpler to count the railroads that did not buy the F7 than it
is to remember which ones had the F7 in service. The F7s
were everywhere! Fifty railroads bought the F7 new and
more than 75 North American railroads had them in service
over the years.
The history of the SOO Line Railroad is interesting:
Prominent business people from Minneapolis founded the
Minneapolis, Sault Ste. Marie and Atlantic Railroad in 1883.
It quickly became the SOO Line due to the pronunciation of
„Sault“. The SOO Line was planned as a railroad to transport
the grain products from Minnesota‘s farmers and mills und
quickly to eastern markets. The line was renamed Minnea-
polis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad as early as 1888
and the route network was gradually expanded throughout
the upper Midwest to Canada. In 1909, the SOO Line took
over the Wisconsin Central Railway in the form of a least ag-
reement. Finally, in 1961 the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault
Ste. Marie Railroad merged officially with the Wisconsin
Central Railway and the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic
Railroad under the new name SOO Line Railroad. In 1985, the
SOO Line acquired the remainder to the bankrupt Milwau-
kee Road. In the Nineties, the Canadian Pacific Railway as a
shareholder of many years took over the railroad completely
and ended its existence as an independent business.
