Each Lady takes a Colour marker. This marker represents the colour of her
team as well as her favourite boutique. Each Lady takes the Visit markers for
her colour
5
. Those belonging to the boutiques that are not in the Shopping
Arcade are left in the box.
Example: panels from the ‘Queen Shop’, pink, Victorian’, green, and
‘Emporium’, blue, are set up. Melanie chooses the green Colour marker. Her
favourite boutique becomes the Victorian’. She then receives a Visit marker
corresponding to the boutiques in the game: ‘Queen Shop’, ‘Emporium’ and
‘Victorian’.
Each Lady takes a Servant card
6
. She may look at it and keep it secret
from the other players, including her Gentleman.
Gentlemen’s side setup:
On the ‘Stock Exchange’ side, set up a pile of Contract cards. Then place one
Contract card face-up opposite each panel of the Shopping Arcade
7
.
Take one Current Market card and place it face-up
8
, in view of everyone.
The other Current Market cards are placed back in the box.
Place all the banknotes on the ‘Stock Exchange’ side
9
. This is the bank.
Each Gentleman receives £500
10
and a Resource token
11
chosen
at random from the three resources with a value of £100 on the Current
Market card that has just been placed (apart from the Gold Ingot).
On the ‘Stock Exchange’ side, place face-down and mixed up, 5 Resource
tokens per Gentleman
12
. Place among those Resource tokens, also face-
down, as many Number tokens
13
as there are Gentlemen. This is the
Stock. These tokens must be accessible to all Gentlemen. The rest of the
Resource tokens are placed in the box.
Example: if there are 3 Gentlemen, place 15 Resource tokens, then the
Number tokens 1, 2 and 3 face-down among the Resource tokens.
NOTE :
during the game, players may
communicate freely, but they are not
allowed to give precise indications of their
secret possessions (money, Servant cards,
etc.) However, alluding or giving general
clues is permitted: “Be reasonable
my love, money’s a little tight at the
moment,“Honey, would it be all right
if I spent some time at the shops today?”
Playing the game
A game features 6 turns, each one representing a day in the life of the characters
involved. At the end of the last turn the Ball takes place, during which the most
elegant Lady is selected.
Order of a day
Each day is divided into 3 phases: in the morning Gentlemen go to the
Stock Exchange while the Ladies indulge in some window-shopping; in the
afternoon it is time to do business; and finally in the evening the bills get
paid. The Ladies and Gentlemen play simultaneously and in parallel, but
they perform different actions.
Morning
Morning: Ladies at the boutiques
In order to make their purchases and build-up their wardrobes, Ladies have a
few rules to follow, or face the consequences:
To go to the Ball, they must have a dress
They may not have multiple copies of the same article (2 dresses, 3 hats, etc.)
Their articles may only come from a maximum of 2 of the 3 designers possible
(JpG, LL or MC).
Each Lady decides what her favourite boutique will have for sale: she selects
one of her Artisan cards and places it face-down in front of her favourite
boutique. Once all the Ladies have chosen and placed their Artisan cards, they
all turn them over.
