Lettertypen
Pitch en puntformaat
De grootte van een lettertype wordt aangegeven als een pitch of puntformaat, afhankelijk van de
vraag of het lettertype een vast of proportioneel lettertype is.
In vaste lettertypen heeft elk teken dezelfde breedte. Pitch wordt gebruikt om de grootte van vaste
lettertypen aan te duiden. De pitch geeft het aantal tekens aan dat op één horizontale inch wordt
afgedrukt. Bijvoorbeeld, bij een lettertype met pitch 10 worden 10 tekens per inch (characters per
inch, of cpi) afgedrukt en bij een lettertype met pitch 12 is dat 12 cpi:
Bij proportionele (of typografische) lettertypen kan elk teken een andere breedte hebben. Omdat de
tekens van proportionele lettertypen een verschillende breedte hebben, wordt de grootte van het
lettertype uitgedrukt in puntformaat, en niet in pitch. Puntformaat heeft betrekking op de hoogte van
de tekens in het lettertype. Een punt is gedefinieerd als 1/72 inch. Tekens in een lettertype die
worden afgedrukt met puntformaat 24, zullen tweemaal zo groot zijn als tekens in hetzelfde lettertype
die worden afgedrukt met puntformaat 12.
In de volgende illustratie ziet u voorbeelden van een lettertype met verschillende puntformaten:
Het puntformaat van een lettertype is gedefinieerd als de afstand tussen de bovenkant van het
hoogste teken in het lettertype tot de onderkant van het laagste teken in het lettertype. Vanwege de
definitie van puntformaat kunnen verschillende lettertypen die worden afgedrukt met hetzelfde
puntformaat, een zeer verschillende grootte hebben. De reden hiervoor is dat er meer
lettertypeparameters zijn die van invloed zijn op het uiterlijk van het lettertype. Het puntformaat van
een lettertype is echter een uitstekende specificatie van de relatieve grootte van een lettertype. De
volgende voorbeelden illustreren twee zeer verschillende proportionele lettertypen met
puntformaat 14:
