Les objets sont déplacés le long de la pente du plan incliné; habituellement, le plan incliné ne
bouge pas.
Les plans inclinés peuvent aussi être utilisés pour contrôler le pourcentage de descente d’un objet à
partir d’une certaine hauteur.
Les vis augmentent la distance sur laquelle l’effort est accompli, mais réduit la quantité d’effort
requise. La distance autour du filet d’une vis est plus longue que la longueur de la vis elle-même.
Ce qui veut dire que le déplacement autour du filet de la vis est plus
long, mais plus facile que le déplacement en ligne droite. Par exemple,
il faut moins d’effort pour monter un escalier en colimaçon que pour
monter une échelle, mais il faut monter plus de marches et couvrir
une plus grande distance pour parvenir au même endroit.
Les coins changent la direction de la force appliquée et augmentent la force sur des objets que l’on veut séparer;
lorsque l’on pousse un coin, l’objet contre lequel on le pousse se déplace latéralement, donc les deux forces se
trouvent à angle droit.
Si le coin est long et mince, il sépare deux objets sur une petite distance, mais grâce à un minimum d’effort.
Si le coin est court et large, les deux objets seront séparés sur une plus grande distance, mais il faudra appliquer
un effort plus grand.
La lame d’un couteau est un coin. Lorsque la lame (le coin) est poussé contre un morceau de fromage (par
exemple), elle sépare une tranche du morceau de fromage.
Les coins et les vis sont deux types de plans inclinés qui se déplacent pour accomplir leurs fonctions.
