Position parallel to travel direction: The
return water from the high-pressure
pump flows into the float tank when the
overflow valve is open.
Note: If the trigger gun is closed in this
ball tap position, the device may switch
off after a few minutes due to too high
temperature (see Troubleshooting/ER-
ROR 3).
Position lateral to travel direction: The
return water of the high-pressure pump
flows into the water tanks when the
overflow valve is open.
Place the actuation lever of the return
flow valve ball tap parallel to the travel
direction (20L).
Close the supply tap of the water tanks.
Set the actuation lever of the return flow
valve ball tap lateral to the travel direc-
tion (500L).
Open the supply tap of the water tanks.
Note: The device can only be operated
when the front cover is closed. If the front
cover is opened, the device shuts down
and the indicator light is on.
Note: Due to the bleeding procedure, the
speed of the motor may vary until the final
operating pressure has been reached.
Unlock the emergency-stop switch by
pulling.
Open rear cover.
Establish the water supply.
Insert the key into the key switch.
With cold engine only:
To preheat the motor, turn the key
switch to the left and hold it until the in-
dicator light preheating goes out.
Turn key switch to position "I". The indi-
cator lamp for operational readiness
lights up.
The control voltage is switch on and the
display shows the operating status.
Turn the key switch to the right until the
motor is running.
Set the appliance switch to operation
with cold/ hot water.
Release the trigger gun. To do so, push
the safety catch towards the back.
Open the hand spray gun.
Set the power switch to "0/OFF“ (burner
off).
DANGER
Scalding danger!
Set the power switch to the desired
working temperature (max. 100 °C).
The burner is switched on.
HDS 9/50, HDS 13/35 only (optional with
HDS 13/20, HDS 17/20):
Note: If the motor speed is increased, the
operating pressure also rises. This can be
read from the pressure gauge.
Increasing the speed:
Push up the lever of the speed control.
Reducing the speed:
Push down the lever of the speed con-
trol.
HDS 13/20, HDS 17/20 only:
Set (+/-) the working pressure and
quantity by turning the pressure/ quan-
tity regulation mechanism at the hand
spray gun.
DANGER
Risk of injury! When adjusting the pressure/
quantity regulation, make sure that the
screw connection of the spray lance does
not become loose.
HDS 13/20, HDS 17/20 only:
ATTENTION
Unsuitable detergents can cause damage
to the appliance and to the object to be
cleaned.
For considerate treatment of the envi-
ronment use detergent economically.
Observe the dosage and other instruc-
tions provided with these detergents.
Use only those detergents approved by
the manufacturer of the appliance.
Kärcher detergents ensure smooth
functioning. Please consult us or ask for
our catalogue or our detergent informa-
tion sheets.
Place the detergent suction hose in a
container filled with detergent and tight-
en the screw cap.
Set dosing value for detergent to the
desired concentration.
Note: To prevent detergent flowing back
into the float tank or water tanks during op-
eration with detergent with the trigger gun
closed, ensure the detergent dosing valve
is closed.
HDS 13/20, HDS 17/20 only (optional):
Note: The (optional) speed control attach-
ment kit is essential when operating weed
removal!
This must be operated in accordance with
Weed Removal operating instructions WR
20/WR 50, Part no. 5.967-071.0!
The following information must also be ob-
served:
Push the lever of the speed control
down as far possible.
Set the device switch to the "Weed re-
moval" operating mode.
1 TEMP LOW appears on display: Heat-
ing-up time in progress (approx. 2 min-
utes)
2 TEMP OKAY appears on display:
Perform weed removal.
Close the hand spray gun.
Secure the trigger gun. To do so, push
the safety catch towards the front.
Note: If the trigger gun is closed, the motor
continues to run at idling speed. The water
therefore flows between float tank and
high-pressure pump and is heated up.
Once the maximum permissible tempera-
ture (55 °C) has been reached, the temper-
ature sensor motor is switched off at the
water inlet. After it has cooled down to be-
low 50 °C, the device can be started up
again.
HDS 13/20, HDS 17/20 only:
Set dosing value for detergent to "0".
Open the hand spray gun and rinse the
appliance for at least 1 minute.
DANGER
Danger of scalding by hot water. After oper-
ation with hot water, the device must be op-
erated with open end handgun with cold
water for at least two minutes.
ATTENTION
Risk of damage! Never stop the motor un-
der full load when the trigger gun is opened.
Set the power switch to "0/OFF“ (burner
off).
Close the hand spray gun.
Motor regulates to reach dry run speed.
Turn the key switch to "0". The opera-
tion readiness indicator lamp goes off.
The control voltage is switched off and
the display goes out.
With external water supply: Shut off wa-
ter supply.
Activate trigger gun until device is pres-
sure-less.
Secure the hand spray gun using the
safety catch so that it doesn't open ac-
cidentally.
With external water supply: Disconnect
the water hose from the water inlet and
coil up the water hose onto the hose
reel.
Coil the high-pressure hose onto the
hose reel.
To protect from freeze damages, the appli-
ance must be flushed with antifreeze.
Note:Use normal glycol-based anti-freez-
ing agents for automobiles.
Note: Observe handling instructions of the
anti-freeze agent manufacturer.
A certain corrosion protection is achieved
with this as well.
Check the coolant circuit of the motor
for sufficient antifreeze, refill antifreeze
as needed.
See Maintenance Procedures "Check
and refill the coolant“.
