Wear heavy gloves when handling the
blades.
Disengage drive to attachments, stop the en-
gineand removethe ignitionkey beforecleaning, checking or
workingonthemachine.
5.4 USINGTHEMACHINE
5.4.1 Starting
Allstartingoperationshavetobeeffectedin
an open or well-ventilated area! ALWAYS REMEMBERTHAT

HE ENGINE’S EXHAUST FUMESARETOXIC!
Tostarttheengine:
– engagethe parkingbrake( 4.5), onslopingground;
– putthe transmissionintoneutral(«N»)( 4.22or4.32/33);
– disengagethe blades( 4.8);
– ifstartedcold, usethechoke( 4.2);
– position the accelerator lever ( 4.3) between «SLOW» and
«FAST»;
– putinthekey( 4.4),andturnto«ON»tomakeelectricalcontact,
thenturnto«START»tostarttheengine;
– releasethekeyonce theenginehasstarted.
Whentheenginehasstarted,puttheacceleratorinthe«SLOpo-
sitionand closethechoke(if fitted).
The chokemust be closed assoon asthe engine
is running smoothly.Using it when the engine is already warm can
foul the spark plug and cause the engine to run erratically.
Should you have difficulties instarting do notper-
sist withusing the startermotor as this can rundown thebattery or
flood the engine.Turn the key to the «OFF» position, wait for a few
seconds andthenrepeat the operation.Shouldthemalfunction per-
sist, refer to chapter «7» of this manual.
Always bear in mind that the safety devices pre-
vent the engine starting when:
the blades are engaged;
the transmission is not in neutral («N»).
the operator is absent with the parking brake disengaged.
Inthesecases,oncethesituationhasbeencorrected,the keymust
first be turned back to «OFF» before the engine can be restarted.
5.4.2 Forwarddrive andmoving withoutmowing
Thismachinehasnotbeenapprovedforuse
on public roads.It has tobe used(as indicated by the High-
way Code) in private areas closed to traffic.
When moving the machine, the blades must be
disengaged and the cutting deck put at its highest position (posi-
tion «7»).
Puttheacceleratorcontrolbetweenthe«SLOand«FASpo-
sitions, and the gear change lever in the 1st speed position
( 4.22).
Keepthe pedal presseddownanddisengagetheparkingbrake.
Slowlyreleasethepedalwhichwillturnfrom«brakto«clutch»,
thusoperatingtherearwheels( 4.21).

Donot usemixturescontainingmore than10%ethanol,or fuelcon-
taining methanol (methyl orwoodalcohol),which do not containco-
solvents, or corrosion inhibitors for methanol.
In the case of a mixture containing methanol with addition of co-

olvents and corrosion inhibitors, limit the proportion to 5% of
methanol.
The guarantee does not cover damage caused to the fuel system
or engine performance problems resulting from the use of fuel
containing alcohol. Honda does not give its approval to the use of
fuels containing methyl alcohol since their suitability is not yet
proven.

.3.4 Checkingthebraking system
Make sure that the machine’s braking capacity is adequate for the
conditionsofusage.Avoidstartingthemachineifyouhavedoubtson
thebrakeefficiency.If necessary, adjustthe brake( 6.3.4).Ifyou
stillhavedoubtsaboutitsefficiency,contact yourDealer.
5.3.5 Fitting theprotectiondevicesat theexit
(grass-catcheror stone-guard)
Neveruse themachinewithout having fitted
the protection devices atthe exit!
Theprotectiondevicesmustbefittedwiththetipping leverslow-
ered.
Attachthegrass-catcherinsertingtheup-
pertubeofthe frame intotheslotsofthe
2brackets(1).
Tocentrethegrass-catchercorrectly,align
thetwosymbolsonthegrass-catcherand
onthe backplate
Makesurethatthelowertubeoftheopen-
ing of the grass-catcher hooks onto the
pawl(2).
Ifthehookistoostiffortooloose,adjust
thereturnspring(
6.3.6).
Ifyouwouldliketomowwithoutusingthe
grass-catcher,anoptionalstone-guardkit
( 9.2)isavailableonrequest.Thishas
to be attached to the rear plate as indi-
catedin therelevantinstructions.
5.3.6 Checking theeffectivenessofthe safety devices
Checkthatthesafetysystemsareworkingproperlybysimulatingthe
varioussituations ofusage listed( 5.2) andmakingsurethat the
indicatedresultisachievedforeachsituation.
5.3.7 Checkingtheblades
Checkthatthebladesaresharpenedproperlyandfirmlyfixedtotheir
hubs.
– A badlysharpened bladepulls atthegrass and causesthelawn
toturnyellow.
– A looseblade causes unusualvibrations andcan be dangerous.
