8. Sleepy Spoons
A variation on the classic game of cards for 3 – 6 alert players, age 4+.
Game Material
Deck of cards (32 cards), 6 stars, farmer, 1 moon
Preparation of the Game
Shuffl e all the cards. Each player gets fi ve cards (6 cards if there are three players)
and takes them in his hand. Get the stars, the farmer and the moon ready.
How to Play
Play in a clockwise direction. Whoever has got up the earliest today may start. If you cannot
agree the youngest player starts and takes the farmer. He is the conductor for this round.
The conductor gives the command “Change cards!”. All players pass one card face down to
their left hand neighbor who takes the card into his hand.
The passing on of cards is repeated until one player has three cards with identical motifs in his
hand (for example three buckets). He immediately places all his cards face up in front of him.
Then he touches the tip of his nose with one fi nger. Whoever notices that a player has done
this, also then immediately places his cards in front of him and touches the tip of his nose.
The last player left with cards in his hand and not in time to place his fi nger on the tip of his
nose is the sleepyhead in this round and receives a star. If there are no stars left, he gets the
moon.
A new round starts. The cards are shuffl ed and dealt. The farmer is passed on to the next
player, in a clockwise direction, who becomes the new conductor.
End of the Game
As soon as the moon has been handed out, the game ends. The player with the fewest
wooden fi gures wins the game. In case of a draw there are various winners.
Hint:
If there are doubts about who was the last to place his cards, the conductor decides.
