The princess and the pea
Once upon a time there was a prince who was looking for a
princess. He traveled far and wide to find the right wife and met
a lot of princesses, but none of them were what he wanted.
Downhearted he returned to his castle.
One evening during a heavy thunderstorm somebody knocked at
the castle gate. The king ordered for the gate to be opened and
discovered a girl there. Her dress and hair were soaked and
bedraggled from the rain and the storm, but she insisted that
really she was a princess.
To double check the suspicious queen prepared her a very special
bed. She put a pea on the bottom of the bed and piled a lot of
mattresses on top. On each mattress she put a duvet of Eider
down*. The princess had to sleep on top of this tower. A real
princess, the queen thought, would notice that something was
hidden beneath.
The next morning the girl was asked how she had slept. “Very
badly“, she answered. “I couldn’t catch a wink because there
was something very, very hard in my bed”. So the royal family
knew that the girl was a real princess. The prince asked for the
hand of the princess and a big and marvelous wedding was cele-
brated.
* Eider down comes from the rare eider ducks. Their breast
feathers are used to make the finest filling material for
duvets that exists. The ducks themselves also use the
down to make the nests. They stuff the nest with the
down so that the little ones have a cozy and warm place
to nest.
