Información sobre los pingüinos para niños mayores
La mayoría de los pingüinos vive en el hemisferio sur, en la Antártida.
Pertenecen a la clase de las aves, pero no saben volar. En cambio son
muy buenos nadadores y pueden bucear en el mar a muchos metros de
profundidad, donde buscan a sus presas. Al sumergirse utilizan sus
poderosas alas para avanzar. Cuando están en la superficie, los pingüi-
nos andan sobre sus dos patas, con movimientos que recuerdan a los
de los patos, pero también pueden deslizarse por el hielo tumbados
boca abajo.
El plumaje de los pingüinos es de color negro en el lomo y blanco por
delante. Es un plumaje muy denso y mantiene el calor incluso dentro
de las frías aguas. No todos los pingüinos son iguales: hay más de 15
especies distintas con diferentes tamaños. Los pingüinos azules miden
aproximadamente 40 cm, que es más o menos la distancia que hay
entre el asiento de una silla y el suelo. Los pingüinos emperador son
los más grandes: miden 115 cm, el equivalente a la altura de un niño
de 4 años.
Cuando una pareja de pingüinos se encuentra, se frotan la cabeza
mutuamente para saludarse. Algunas especies de pingüinos incuban
sus huevos en nidos en el suelo. En la Antártida, los papás pingüino
mantienen el huevo entre las patas y lo empollan en una especie de
bolsa que tiene en la barriga. Después de eclosionar, los bebés
pingüino se quedan en ella hasta que son lo bastante autónomos.

Los niños dejan colgar los brazos, extienden las manos
hacia fuera e imitan el andar de un pingüino, balanceán-
dose con pasos cortos por el salón. Si se encuentran de
cara con otro niño, se saludan frotándose las cabezas o
las narices con cuidado.
• Hagan una escapada al zoo más cercano y observen
juntos a los pingüinos.
