2. Sound out the syllables

Say the word out loud and sound out the syllables. The other players have to conﬁrm

whether your word ﬁts the number of syllables thrown on the die. If the number of

syllables is wrong, or if you cannot think of an appropriate word with the required

 numberofsyllables,thenyourturnisover.Onceit‘syourturnagain,rollthedieandtry

your luck with a new picture card.

3. Look at the number chip

Only when you have sounded out the correct number of syllables, can you turn over the

number chip as a reward. Remember the color of the area and the number well, as it is

part of the safe combination. Then put the number chip face down again in its place.

At the end of your turn, place your picture card face up next to the corresponding stack.

Open the safe

Once a player thinks they know the right combination of the four numbers in the safe com-

bination and their playing piece has exactly reached the headquarters, then they may try to

crack the safe.

Reveal the ﬁrst safe chip. The colored symbol on it shows the area of the city for which you

need to say the correct number. Say the number that you discovered in the clue of the same

color out loud so that all the players may hear it.

Then privately check whether the number you said out loud matches the number chip for

this area of the city:

• Ifyouremembereditcorrectly,thenturnthenumberschipfaceupandplaceiton

the clue. Then reveal the next safe chip and continue as above.

• Ifyoumakeamistakeandsayanincorrectnumber,thenplacethenumberchip

face down on the clue without letting the other players see the number. Turn all

of the face up number chip face down again. You have to also turn revealed safe

chips face down again, mix them up with the others and make a new face down

stack. Put your playing piece on the clue whose number you called out incorrectly.

Then the next player takes their turn.

End of the game

The game ends when one player has correctly stated the full combination and all safe and

number chips are face up. This player is the master detective and wins the tricky Operation

Codebreaker!
