Safe Timer
When you initiate a charge process, the integral safety timer automatically
starts running at the same time. Its purpose is to prevent massive
overcharging of the battery if the pack is faulty, or if the cut-off circuit is not
triggered correctly.
You should set a time value here which allows for the battery connected to
the charger to be fully charged, but not disastrously overcharged. A good
starting point is around 30% more than the expected charge time, which
will vary according to the charge current you have set.
Example: 1.8 Ah battery, charge current 3.6 A charge time = 1.8 A / 3.6 Ah = 0.5 hours = 30
minutes + 30% = Safety Timer =
40 minutes.
Buzzer
The purpose of this sub-menu is to adjust the settings for the audible sounder.
Buzzer: Every time you press a button the charger emits an audible
signal to confirm your action. This sound can be switched ON
or OFF. If an Information message, a Ready message or an
Error message appears on the screen, the integral buzzer
also sounds.

As soon as the charger terminates the charge process, the
ULTRAMAT 14 emits an audible signal lasting about 10 seconds
(no audible signal if the buzzer is switched off). The screen
displays the superimposed message „END“ at regular intervals.
The bottom line of the screen displays the actual battery voltage.
You can display the charge time and the charged-in capacity by
pressing one of the INC / DEC buttons.
If a problem arises, perhaps with premature charge termination, it
is a good idea to check the setting of the safety timer (see page
11).
Please check the information supplied by your battery
manufacturer.
When the charge process is complete you can safely disconnect
the battery from the charger. Press the MODE button to return to
the original Charge menu. Please note that the charge time and the
charged-in capacity are not stored, and are erased when you
press the MODE button.
11. Special functions
NiCd / NiMH Delta-Peak trigger voltage (-
Peak)
When the charge process is started the battery voltage initially rises continuously, but as the pack
approaches full capacity it begins to heat up. This in turn causes the battery voltage to fall slightly
(Delta-V). The charger detects and assesses the voltage decline. It is possible to adjust the sensitivity
or trigger voltage (in mV per cell!) of the automatic cut-off circuit for Ni-Cd batteries. A practical
range of values has proved to be 3 … 25 mV / cell. Higher voltages often lead to overcharging of the
battery, whereas a lower voltage will often result in premature termination of the charge process.
We recommend that you check the information supplied by your battery manufacturer, then carry
out a series of test-charges to establish the optimum value for your battery.
The automatic charge termination circuit
(battery full detection) works on the proven
Delta Peak principle (also known as the Delta-
V process), which is already in use in millions
of chargers. This process analyses the voltage
peak of the charge curve, which indicates with
great accuracy when the maximum charge capacity is reached.

The ULTRAMAT 14 features three special functions which are designed to make charging 1 - 14
Ni-Cd / Ni-MH cells and 1 - 5 Li-Po / Li-Io cells more convenient and - above all - safer.
The first of these is the facility to adjust the Delta Peak sensitivity (voltage drop) for Ni-Cd / Ni-MH
cells. This is important, as it makes the ULTRAMAT 14 future-proof by allowing it to be adjusted to
suit later generations of battery cells.
The Safe Timer provides an additional level of safety, and - if set correctly - protects the battery
from being overcharged. The Buzzer menu enables you to switch the audible signals on and off.
