RSSI
Received Signal Strength Indication. Kennwert für die Signalstärke von Funkverbindun-
gen, den Kommunikationsgeräte zur automatischen Wahl eines geeigneten Kanals ver-
wenden.
Server
Ein Server stellt anderen Netzwerkkomponenten (Clients) Dienste zur Verfügung. Häu-
fig bezeichnet der Begriff Server einen PC. Es kann aber auch eine Anwendung gemeint
sein, die einen bestimmten Dienst wie DNS, DHCP oder Web-Service bereitstellt.
SIP
Session Initiation Protocol. SIP ist ein Standard für die Datenübertragung bei Internet-
Telefonie (VoIP). Er beschreibt, wie ein Gespräch über das Datennetz abläuft und welche
Komponenten, welche Transport- und Signalisierungsprotokolle daran beteiligt sind.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. Das SMTP-Protokoll ist ein TCP/IP-Protokoll und regelt den
Austausch von elektronischer Post im Internet. Dazu stellt Ihnen Ihr Provider einen
SMTP-Server zur Verfügung.
Subnetz
Ein Subnetz unterteilt ein Netzwerk in kleinere Teilnetzwerke.
Subnetzmaske
Die Subnetzmaske bestimmt, wie viele Teile der IP-Adressen eines Netzwerks die Netz-
nummer repräsentieren und wie viele Teile die Nummer der Netzwerkkomponente.
Ist die Subnetzmaske in einem Netzwerk z. B. 255.255.255.0, bedeutet dies, dass die
ersten drei Teile der IP-Adresse die Netznummer bilden und nur der letzte Teil für die
Vergabe von Nummern der Netzwerkkomponenten verwendet werden kann. Die ersten
drei Teile der IP-Adresse aller Netzwerkkomponenten sind in diesem Fall also immer
gleich.
Switch
Ein Switch ist ein zentraler Verteiler im kabelgebundenen Netzwerk, der im Gegensatz
zu einem Hub eine intelligente Verteilung des Datentransfers bietet. Der Switch leitet
ein Datenpaket immer nur an das Subnetz bzw. die Netzwerkkomponente weiter, für
welche das Datenpaket bestimmt ist. Unnötiger Datentransfer im Netzwerk wird somit
vermieden.
TAE
Telekommunikations-Anschlusseinheit. Steckverbindung zum Anschluss analoger Tele-
kommunikationsgeräte. F für Telefon, N für Zusatzgeräte wie Fax oder Anrufbeantwor-
ter.
