15.2.2 Use of hub gears
i
Important: In addition, observe the
corresponding manufacturer's
instructions for your hub gears or
for your control element.
Your hub gears have either a gear lever or
a twist grip shifter as the associated control
element.
For shifting with gear lever:
Press the lower lever on the control up
to shift up.
Press down the upper lever on the
control element to shift down.
For shifting with twist grip shifter:
Turn the twist grip shifter in or against
the direction of travel to shift up or down.
Hub gears with step display (does not
apply to continuously variable hub gears):
Make sure that the set speed is displayed
in the center of the display field on the twist
grip shifter to ensure that it is set correctly.
16 Suspensions
16.1 General information
16.1.1 Functionality of suspension
components
Suspension components include a spring
(exposed or inside the component) that
operates either mechanically or pneumati-
cally, depending on the model.
During compression, the spring is com-
pressed by the force acting on the sus-
pension component. When the spring then
moves back to its previous (relaxed) shape
during extension, it pushes the suspension
component to its original position. Depend-
ing on the model, hydraulic dampers provide
better control during compression/rebound.
Available suspension components
Depending on the model, your e-bike has
one or more of the following suspension
components:
A suspension fork.
For more information on the function
and position on the e-bike, refer to chap-
ter 16.2 “Suspension forks”.
a coil-sprung seat post.
For more information on the function
and position on the e-bike, refer to chap-
ter 16.4 “Suspension seat posts”.
A rear shock absorber.
For more information on the function
and position on the e-bike, refer to chap-
ter 16.3 “Chainstay damper”.
16.1.2 Suspension component
adjustment
To ensure the function of the respective sus-
pension, the frameset must be adjusted to
the cyclist's weight and the range of use.
Have your suspension components
adjusted by a FLYER specialist dealer or
have a FLYER specialist dealer instruct
you on the correct adjustment of the
respective component.
i
Important: Note that suspension
components may need to be read-
justed if you drive with a higher
load, for example, during a ride.
You can adjust the resistance of the spring to
compression via the yield (spring tension).25
The yield is the distance by which the sus-
pension element is compressed when the
cyclist is located on the center of the bicycle.
The yield preloads the suspension element
and keeps the rear wheel on the ground in
case of low loads and slight bumps, improv-
ing grip and traction in rough terrain. The
compliance is usually 25% of the total avail-
able spring travel.
To tune the compliance of your suspension
element, you need to adjust the spring rate/
air pressure. When you adjust the air pres-
sure, the overall rigidity of the suspension
fork also changes. The more you inflate the
suspension element, the harder it becomes.
By means of the rebound and compres-
sion stage of the hydraulic damper, you
can set the speed at which the spring com-
presses or decompresses.26
25 The weaker the spring tension (i.e. the resistance to
compression) is set, the easier/the further the spring
can be compressed.
26 The weaker the compression or rebound damping is
set, the easier/the faster the spring moves back to its
original position.
