Transients. Transient overvoltages are either non-oscillatory (impulsive) or oscillatory signals
on mains caused by lightning strikes, switching of heavy loads, such as motors, welders, power
factor correction banks, or switching of overcurrent protection devices.
Transient overvoltage can cause damage to the insulation of motors, transformers, and
electronic equipment. Depending on the overvoltage category, peak values can occur, see
Table 1 4 .

On the Fluke 1777, use 1 MS/s if the subsequent waveform after the event up to 0.5 s is of
