Practical Tips
- Rotation limiter: The telescopic base and the mounting fork are equipped with an
internal"rotationlimiter".Thehorizontalturnstilepreventsthetelescopefromturningby

that the viewfinder does not move against the mounting fork when the telescope is tilted
beyondthevertical90°position.Italsoensuresthattheopticaltubenevertouchesthe

these locks manually or by motor drive. You would damage your instrument with it.
- Vertical clamping; declination pitch circle:Theactuationoftheverticalclamping(6,fig.

arm, which has a numerical scale and is used to search for astronomical objects.
- Note on observations in closed rooms: Although the telescope could occasionally be
used to make observations at low magnification through an open or even closed window,
the best observation is always made outside. Temperature differences between indoors
andoutdoorsand/orthepoorqualityofmostdomesticwindowsarelikelytocausehighly
distorted images in the telescope. Never expect high-resolution images under these
conditions!
Telescope control
The use of the MCX telescope is made easy by a consistently well thought-out arrangement
of the functions and the manual operating options. Make sure that you have familiarized
yourself with all the functions before starting the practical observation.
Horizontal clamping (9, Fig. 2 and Fig. 18): It influences the manual horizontal rotation of
the telescope while the telescope rotates as shown in Fig. 2 is in upright position. If you
operatethehorizontalclampcounterclockwise,thetelescopeisreleased;itcannowbe
rotated horizontally by hand without hindrance. As soon as you turn the horizontal clamp
clockwise, block the manual horizontal movement. At the same time, however, the clutch
ofthehorizontaldriveisactivatedforusewiththeAutoStar#497handheldcomputer.
When the telescope is aligned with the celestial pole, the horizontal clamp serves as a
rightascensionorRAclamp(theterm"rightascension"isexplainedinmoredetailon

Vertical clamping (6, Fig. 2 and Fig. 19): It affects the manual vertical rotation of the
telescope as it moves as shown in Fig. 2 is in upright position. If you operate the vertical
clamp counterclockwise, the telescope is released; it can now be swivelled vertically
unhindered by hand. As soon as you tighten the vertical clamp clockwise (hand tight
only!), block the manual vertical movement. At the same time, however, the clutch of
the vertical drive is activated for use with the handheld computer. When the telescope is
aligned with the celestial pole, the vertical clamp serves as a declination or DEC clamp
(theterm"declination"isexplainedinmoredetailonpage18).
