paper bags, polystyrene container, polyurethane or wood, that could damage the appliance and could be harmful
to food.
MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF A MICROWAVE OVEN
The operating principle of a microwave oven is the use of magnetic waves to cook food.
The heart of the technology is a device that can generate electromagnetic waves that led into the microwave
oven heats the water molecules into the food. Water molecules are agitated and produce heat that spreads uni-
formly reaching the deeper layers of the food.
Foods with high water content cook more quickly and evenly. For example, vegetables need only few minutes,
(depending on the quantity) thanks to their high water content.
Compared to traditional cooking methods, microwave ovens will not burn food easily if the advice on cooking
times are applied.
Also compared to the traditional cooking methods, reduced cooking time or high energy efciency is one of the
main advantages of microwave ovens. Limited exposure of food to high temperature helps maintain its nutritional
properties.
The microwave oven is also very useful and convenient to defrost and reheat food.
Cooking in a microwave oven is safe, does not produce permanent changes in the molecular structure of foods.
The downside of cooking in the microwave is the difculty of assaying the exact cooking time for each food.
Food
Some foods are not suitable for cooking in microwave oven such as the eggs that could explode, while foods with
a skin (such as apples, pears, sausages, etc..) must be punched before cooking.
The closed bottles should not be reheated in the microwave oven, alcohols are potential sources of re.
Containers
Electromagnetic waves are repelled by metals which are not suitable for use in microwave ovens. Also crystals
that contains lead, plastic that contains melamine, aluminium foils and trays are not microwavable. Glass, terra
cotta, paper products are suitable only if there are indications marked on the bottom or on the packaging of the
products themselves.
Porcelain and ceramics that have metal edging or gilt edges are excluded.
It is advisable to use oval containers without corners or edges. For baby bottles, no rubber part must be heated
In the microwave ovens, only microwavable plastic part can be.
USEFUL ADVICE
Cooking depends on the homogeneity, quantity and type of food.
It is recommended to cut the vegetables into strips or pieces for cooking.
Add water if necessary or if written on the package.
ADVICE FOR DEFROST
Frozen foods in bags or in plastic wrap or own packaging can be put directly into the microwave oven, provided
that there are no metal parts (ex: aluminium attachment).
Some foods, as vegetables and sh, do not need to be defrosted completely before cooking.
Meat or sh under defrost may lose their liquid. It is recommended to defrost them in a tray.
Defrosting food in the microwave oven does not contribute to the growth of bacteria.
