THE VALVES
With the exception of the extra sporty
bicycles (Race & ATB), all Batavus models
are equipped with the classical Dutch
valve. Twist off the cap, pump up the tyre
until it is hard and you can get back on.
A reducing nipple is therefore no longer
necessary. Batavus Royal Class bicycles
have tyres which are equipped with a val-
ve with a pressure gauge which indicates
when the inner tube has to be pumped
up a bit more. Your Batavus dealer will
be happy to explain this to you.
• Pump your tyres up hard. You should
just be able to make a slight indenta-
tion in the tyre with your thumbs. Soft
tyres can be damaged or punctured
more easily. Furthermore, tyres at the
right pressure means: easier cycling,
less wear on the tyre and faster and
better braking.
• The maximum pressure is usually
given on the side of the tyre (in Bar). It
is best to use a pump with a tyre gauge
when pumping up your tyres.
THE LIGHTING
GOOD VISIBILITY AND EASILY VISIBLE
Effective lighting is exceptionally
important for your safety and that
of other road users. The rule: ‘Good
visibility and easily visible’, still applies.
In addition to a headlight and back-
light which work well, back and pedal
refl ectors and refl ecting strips on the
tyres are also very important.
THE HEADLIGHT
Many Batavus bicycles have a patented
Batavus discovery: the Clerion halogen
headlight (35). This powerful halogen
lamp is brighter and has a longer life
than other lights. The secret lies in the
lens. The lens used to be in the glass at
the front of the light but now it is in the
refl ecting parabola at the back of the
light. As a result the light yield is superior.
The LED headlight is another Batavus
development. An LED (Light Emitting
Diode) has a number of big advanta-
ges compared with a normal bulb. The
life of an LED is, for example, much
longer than that of a bulb and LEDs
are not usually vulnerable to jars and
jolts. LEDs are also very economical as
regards energy consumption.
The dynamo is usually responsible for
the power supply to the headlight
and possibly also the backlight. When
the drive wheel revolves, a voltage is
produced in the magnetic fi elds which
is fed to the light. There are also head-
lights which work on batteries. The fol-
lowing different models of headlight
are used on Batavus bicycles:
A. The normal type of headlight (35),
which is fed by a dynamo.
B. The Batavus LED headlight.
C. A headlight with automatic switch
which is used in combination with a
hub dynamo. The automatic switch me-
ans that the light can be switched ‘ON’
or ‘OFF’ or to ‘AUTOMATIC’ (so that it
responds to light and movement).
D. A headlight with batteries.
THE BACKLIGHT
Various types of backlights are used in
Batavus bicycles too:
A. A backlight with automatic switch
and battery. This technology (which
works on batteries) makes use of a
sensor and automatically switches the
backlight on when it becomes dark
and if the bicycle moves. This backlight
continues to shine for a while when the
bicycle stops (e.g. for safety at traffi c
lights).
