THE WHEELS
LIGHT AND STRONG
A bicycle wheel is a wonderful piece of
technology. The rim, hub and spokes
(together with the rim band, inner
tube and tyre) jointly form an extre-
mely light yet strong wheel. It is the
most important factor in ensuring that
a bicycle rides smoothly. Various factors
play a role in producing a light easy
ride: fi rm tyres, taut spokes and a well-
adjusted hub which is free from play.
You can take care of the fi rst factor
yourself, the latter two are in good
hands with your Batavus dealer.
REMOVING THE REAR WHEEL
In the case of a bicycle with a derailleur
system this goes as follows:
1. Hang the bicycle up on a hook.
2. Shift the chain to the smallest sproc-
ket wheel (rear).
3. Slacken the brake cable. For the
V-brake you do this by removing the
cable guide or tube from the holder
(31). For a cantilever brake take the
nipple at the end of the brake cable
out of the recess on the brake arm (32).
4. Stand behind the rear wheel and
slacken (A) the quick release lever.
5. Pull the derailleur backwards.
6. Slide the wheel out of the fork ends.
REPLACING THE REAR WHEEL
In the case of a bicycle with a derailleur
system this goes as follows:
1. Pull the derailleur backwards.
2. Position the rear wheel such that the
chain falls on the smallest toothed ring.
3. Pull the rear wheel between the fork
ends.
4. Tighten the quick release lever
of the axle. When you tighten this
lever, the handle turns 180º. It meets
with resistance during a third of this
distance and not during the remaining
two thirds. Your Batavus dealer will be
happy to show you how it works.
5. After securing the rear wheel (you
are now standing behind the bicycle)
the handle of the quick release lever
must now be on the left of the rear
fork (from your point of view). Keep
the handle parallel to the horizontal
rear fork, but not up against it.
6. Increase the tension on the brake
cable again by tightening the brake
release (47/48).
7. Check whether the brakes and gears
are working properly and whether the
wheel is in the middle.
THE SPOKES
Spokes are essential components of
your wheels. Too little tension on
the spokes can be detrimental to the
stability of the bicycle or, in time, lead
to spokes breaking. Tensioning spokes
is a very precise job. It is therefore
advisable to leave this to your Batavus
dealer. The spokes must be adjusted a
few weeks after the purchase of your
bicycle (but you must have cycled a few
hundred kilometres on it by then).
• If the wheel has a wobble or loose
spokes, your Batavus dealer will correct
