The upper tubes (the inner poles) slide
into the lower tubes, which are wider.
A front fork is equipped with a) a compres-
sion spring with elastomer (plastic cushio-
ning) or b) a compression spring system.
Seals in the top of the lower tubes
ensure that no water or dirt can pene-
trate into the internal mechanism. It is
advisable to leave the maintenance of
the suspension front fork to your Ba-
tavus dealer. He can also help with any
adjustment which may be necessary.
Keeping it clean on the outside is, of
course, something you can do yourself.
• Water may not be allowed into the
lower tube when cleaning. It is there-
fore inadvisable to use a garden hose
or high-pressure sprayer.
• Please see your Batavus dealer for
adjustment of your suspension front
and back forks.
THE CHAIN AND
PEDALS
The closed chain guard is a proven
means of preventing dirt from the road
getting into the chain as far as possible.
It may, however, be necessary to have
a look behind the chain guard if you
hear a lot of squeaking and creaking.
After a time, water (particularly if it is
salty) will eventually fi nd its way in to
the chain. For maintenance and adjust-
ment of the chain tension, please see
your Batavus dealer.
A bicycle with derailleur does not have
a chain guard. Because of the large
number of gear options of a derailleur
system, the chain cannot be closed up
in a chain guard. Sand, dust and (salty)
water therefore have free access.
Consult your Batavus dealer on how to
determine the correct chain tension. He
also has the correct lubricant in stock.
Incidentally, this has to be applied very
sparingly because dirt sticks to an ex-
cessively oily chain. An old toothbrush
is an ideal tool for cleaning not only
the chain but also the derailleur hou-
sing and sprocket wheels.
You can use a mild degreaser or special
cleaning fl uid (available from your Ba-
tavus dealer) for a thorough service.
Do not under any circumstances use
petrol. It is too harsh and also infl am-
mable!
When maintaining your bicycle, look
out for rusty and/or stiff links (the so-
called ‘harmonica’ effect) (20). Clean
the links well and move them back and
forth. If this ‘harmonica’ effect conti-
nues, replace the chain or, better still,
have it replaced. If the chain has to be
replaced, the sprocket wheel usually
has to be replaced too. The chain and
the toothed rings of the freewheel
form a close twofold unit. The spaces
between the toothed rings on the rear
hub can easily be cleaned by going
back and forth with an old lace. After
this treatment, oil the chain lightly,
including the hinges and hinge points
on the front and rear derailleurs. Wipe
superfl uous oil off with a cloth.
