is therefore advisable to check, on a
regular basis, whether there is indeed
play. You can do so by trying to push
the bicycle backwards and forwards
while braking with the front brake.
Excessive play can be felt immedia-
tely. It is advisable to go along to your
Batavus dealer for regular checks. It is
more diffi cult to ascertain play if your
bicycle has roller brakes, because the
roller brake construction suggests play.
It is therefore advisable to leave this to
your Batavus dealer.
HUB GEARS
A SMOOTH RIDE
A Batavus bicycle with hub gears ensu-
res smooth, easy gear shifting.
It is advisable to choose a lighter gear
rather than one which is slightly too
heavy to spare your back and knees. Use
the heaviest gear as much as possible
for descents or if you have a tail wind.
There is a rotary gear switch on a lot of
Batavus models (14). It is ergonomically
shaped and light to operate.
You will have a smoother gear shift
and spare the mechanism if you stop
pedalling for a moment while shifting
gear. If, as time goes by, gears jump
spontaneously or you experience
any creaking, just cycle down to your
Batavus dealer and have your bicycle
checked out. He can easily correct these
defects.
• Gear hubs may never be oiled.
• Make sure that there is not too much
play in the hubs. This causes unneces-
sary wear.
• If you should want to take out the
back wheel, it is advisable to go to your
Batavus dealer, to avoid damaging
components!
You can adjust some of these hubs
yourself.
ADJUSTING THE SPECTRO 7-GEAR HUB
Put the gear switch in position 4. Ad-
just the stretching screw of the clickbox
such that the black line in the red area
is aligned with the line in the transpa-
rent plastic cap.
ADJUSTING THE NEXUS 7 OR 8-GEAR
HUB
1. Put the gear switch in position 4.
2. Check whether the red markings on
the gear shift unit (by the back wheel
on the side of the chain guard) are alig-
ned. Stand behind the bicycle. In order
to be able to see the red dots you now
have to push the back part of the chain
guard slightly to the left with your
