Personal Safety User Guide - January 2022
Use Emergency SOS (all countries or regions except India)
When you make a call with Emergency SOS, your iPhone can quickly call the local
emergency number. After the call ends, your iPhone sends your emergency contacts a
text message with your current location, unless you choose to cancel. If Location Services
is off, it temporarily turns itself on. If your location changes, your contacts get an update
and you get a notification about 10 minutes later. (When your location is being shared
through this feature, you get a reminder every 4 hours for 24 hours. To stop sharing your
location, You can tap the status bar at the top of your screen and select Stop Sharing
Emergency Location.)
On your iPhone with
Face ID, iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus: Press and hold the
side button and either volume button.
If you want a loud alarm to sound, continue to hold the two buttons when the
Emergency SOS slider appears. The iPhone plays a warning sound and starts a
countdown. When the countdown ends, iPhone calls emergency services.
To quietly engage the call, after pressing the side button and either volume button,
drag the Emergency SOS slider.
On other iPhone models: Click the side button or the Sleep/Wake button (depending on
your model) five times, then drag the Emergency SOS slider.
You can change the way Emergency SOS is engaged, so that it starts when you click the
side button five times. To do this, go to Settings > Emergency SOS, then turn on “Call with
Side button.
